Foo - Things you'd sell first should you get into financial burden

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

We all have something we'd be willing to sacrifice if need be. What would you let go?

For me:

The knives. I'd let them go first. Quick money, holds their value somewhat and I know a bunch of people that would want them.

Probably first have a major garage sale to get rid of all the general junk one accumulates over the years. If I had to get rid of my valuable stuff, I'd probably start with my woodworking tools. They typically go under-utilized for most of the time.

Forgot about a garage sale. Yeah, I'd actually do that first. Then the knives. *whew* Thanks for that, Alfster.

Yup, I'd have to agree, I would def sell your knives before I sell my valuable stuff. =0p

motorcycle, I can always get another. Every spring there are loads of used bikes people are willing to sell for cheap.

Not exactly sell, but I would have to let the cook and housekeeper go. (no, not my wife you evil people!) After that probably the gardener.

some how I don't think this is what you meant...

We'd probably sell my car. Don't really own anything except the house, 2 cars, 2 bikes and 4-5 surfboards. My car doesn't get used much.

Yeah, but I think giving up the mechanic who cleans my bike would be really cutting to the bone...

The truth is all these people work for the company, and our home is a meeting place and office. I would honestly just as soon not have everyone around doing all these things, and I do cut my own grass with a scythe.

Motorcycle, the RV, one of the cars. The video games and bikes are too hard to part with. People complain about Craigslist, but I find I get a hell of a lot more money for stuff I list there than I would paying someone 10-20% to do it for me.

One of the Monets probably. Some of the Chihuly pieces. The Type 56 Bugatti and one of the gull wing Benzs. After that I would really have to think about what would generate the most cash.

The wife and I have discussed that very issue. I've said on a few occassions that if things get tight, I may have to lay her off.
Of course, I only say this because I can out run her.

On a serious note, I have my collection of WW II military uniforms and equipment, some of my bikes and if things become desperate,
and I mean really desperate, my '72 Porsche 914.

I too, am a big fan of REI and will snatch a good deal when I see one however, I would rather give up things from Nordstrom because any item from there is a want, never a need.

Hmmm, accumulated junk, bags, clothes that I will never wear again (like my prom gown). Maybe the books, but that's after everything else is sold and I still need money. Not selling the bikes or the musical instruments!!!

You'd be surprised at what you'd be willing to sell if you really needed money. Desperation quickly changes people's priorities ... and there's lots of desperate people these days. I remember having to sell a very expensive camera when I was in my early 20's. I LOVED that camera, however I needed the money for school. I only got a 1/3 of what I paid for it :(

Don't worry, they'd never take him.

Well without the bikes I can't get around, and without the instruments, I can't make money on the side. They're worth more to me than the actual cash value. If I did sell some of the bikes though, I'd definitely still keep the brommie.

In a financial pinch, the car goes first. Partly because it would raise the most money the quickest, and equally importantly because there are ongoing expenses associated with a car. I'd also sell as much furniture as possible in order to be able to stop living alone in a one bedroom apartment and move into a cheaper living arrangement. There's no point in selling other stuff if I don't cut back unnecessary expenses that would blow right through what little money I could get by selling what few other valuable possessions I have.

So you know 914's?

It's a 4 cylinder, but it was bored out from 1.7 to 2.2 liter. The car also had steel GT flares added in the last couple of years as well as new paint. Scroll down for a picture of it.

Hellllll no.

Though I'll give you $250 for it. Unless it's a basket case. I already have a project VW.

Would you say this is a basket case?

I've actually been there... you give up things like cable (TV and computer), the extra phone, magazines, eating out and entertainment, shopping unless it is for necessities (toilet paper and bread - necessary, cookies, pizza and paper towels are not), I kept my old car (it's now 15 years old) and not bought new like everyone else. I am using the "car payment" to either save or pay off debt. I don't take vacations, I don't have the latest greatest electronics (I still have a great big ole TV, no flat screen) and my clothes are simple and make do from year to year. By doing this I paid off $11,000 in debt in 3 years.

Now if I need "big" money I am screwed since I have nothing of value. I never bought into jewelry and stuff. I don't own a home. The only thing I could do is cash in my 401K, such as it is.

I'd sell raffle tickets to win Siu as a slave for a day, one raffle for each day in the year, then leave town for parts unknown before the first person shows up to claim her.

Getting stuck w/ leftovers from various deceased relatives I'm finding most stuff isn't worth the hassle of selling.

So I guess that's what I'd do, give away to the goodwill as much crap as possible so that it takes less cubic footage to live in and then move to a smaller place.

I stole the following story from Steve Martin, and I want to know if your toe nails come with the cuticles

Carolyn wanted so much to give Roger something nice for Christmas, but they didn’t have much money, and they had to spend every last cent on candy for the baby. She walked down the icy streets and peered into shop windows.
“Roger is so proud of his shinbones. If only I could find some way to get money to buy shinbone polish.”
Just then, a sign caught her eye. “Cuticles bought and sold.” Many people had told Carolyn of her beautiful cuticles, and Roger was especially proud of them, but she thought, “This is the way I could buy Roger the shinbone polish!” And she rushed into the store.
Later at home, she waited anxiously as Roger came up the steps of their flat. He opened the door and wobbled over to the fireplace, suspiciously holding one arm behind his back.
“Merry Christmas!” they both said, almost simultaneously.
Roger spoke. “Hey, Nutsy, I got you a little something for Christmas.”
“Me too,” said Carolyn, and they exchanged packages.
Carolyn hurriedly opened her package staring in disbelief. “Cuticle Frames?! But Roger, I sold my cuticles so I could afford to buy you some shinbone polish!”
“Shinbone polish!” said Roger, “I sold my shinbones to buy you the cuticle frames!” Roger wobbled over to her.
“Well, I’ll be hog-tied,” said Carolyn.
“You will? Oh, boy!” said Roger.
And it turned out to be a great Christmas after all.
