Hi folks, I'm the Chairperson for the CJBC's Longest Day event (http://www.linuxha.com/other/non-ha/bicycle/LongestDay.html). I've posted here in the past and I'm doing it again. :-) I want to provide a place for the folks interested in doing a simple, interesting double century through NJ a place to ask questions online. I don't expect much traffic and I hope they'll behave. Thanks

CJBC's Longest Day

The Longest Day (LD) is an annual single day, self supported double century ride through NJ (from Port Jervis NY to Cape May) presented by the CJBC (http://www.cjbc.org). It occurs on Saturday, June 12th 2010. There is also a century, starting in Allentown NJ, and a double metric, starting along the Griggstown Canal. As far as double centuries go its a relatively easy ride but is not without certain challenges. There will be two meetings to help with teams and other information. They are, Tuesday, April 13th @ 7 pm and Tuesday, May 18th @ 7 pm, both in the East Brunswick Public! The cost is $40 for the event and $15 for membership to the CJBC. I'm considering it. Well, dreaming about it might be more accurate.

Is it pretty easy to get a ride from Cape May back to civilization (i.e. Central NJ, or at least a NJTransit train?)

That is certainly a good question, and I can't answer it. Come to think of it, I can't remember the last time someone asked "why would you do that?" on this forum. But anyway, the Longest Day is something of an event. It has a regional reputation. People talk about it year round.

Other than that... anyone want to suggest other centuries, doubles, metric doubles, &c in the NJ area?

I don't mind paying for a ride but it's nice to get something for my money like maybe lunch or and after ride meal, a pair of socks, something. Maybe this ride offers something other than support, that's why I asked. If you're giving them $55 just for the privilege of riding on public roads that you can ride on your own any day of the week I don't see the point. Maybe it's a charity thing, I don't know.

Homeyba, I'm with you. I don't mind paying for a ride that I ride all the time if I'm getting some support or that it goes to a charity I support.

In the early years of this event (80s) the only requirement was membership to CJBC. The only cost were the hotel stays if you wanted to make reservations (discounted because of the large number of riders). Since each group is resonsible for its own SAG, food and supplies, and this is not a charitable event, no meals etc., I agree there should not be a charge.

Hi folks sorry I've been busy with registration, organization and checking out the route.

While the Longest Day may be unsupported (no SAG, no organized rest stops) we do check the route, make route changes and provide a cue sheet. Also for your money there is insurance, permits for parking of vehicles at certain places, help forming teams (we can't assign you a team), discounts at the hotels, the vest (it's not a wind vest, see below) and the 'Morning after' breakfast. I try to work with the teams to help them find rest stops with what they need, point out anything of concern to their needs and other services. Most of the cost is the vest, insurance and the breakfast.

This year we were supposed to get wind vests but the vest that were available looked like golf vests and not wind vests. So we're back to the poly-pro vests we had last year. Sorry but this is my first time chairing the event and I'm still learning. I'm also working on the Jersey for this years event. That's extra and I picked that up at the last minute when the that person had to take care of other things. I am hoping that we can put together a welcoming committee for the light house (I've got a volunteer, we're working out the details).

I'll try to check in more often but I'm also training for the Longest Day. :)

I apologize for the sour sound of this message, I can't quite get it worded without that tone though that's not my position.

For $40 you still get the meal and the vest. If you view it as $40 to ride on public roads then you shouldn't pay the $40. But don't expect to benefit from the discounts and everything else. Nobody can stop you from riding the route just don't be surprised at road closures and detours Trust me when I say the club doesn't make money on this but we also don't try to lose money either.

If you've got suggestions on what you might want to see on the ride let me know. I can't promise I'll incorporate every suggestion but I'll try to see if I can work them in..
