Can anyone comment on the Shimano computer that works with the Ultegra shifters, is there any advantage to this?

Best computer? Avocet 45. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find anymore. If anyone has one laying around, I'll pay $$ for a spare one or two.

My vote is for the Specialized Turbo Pro computer. It does everything except heartrate and only retails for $99.
It has wireless speed, wired cadence, incline, elevation, elevation gain, stopwatch, interval timer, temperature, speed, average speed, max speed and I'm sure I'm forgetting something. It is awesome!

Flight Deck for the road bike. It's a clean set up and I love the buttons on the hoods.
Avocet 45 for the mountain bike. All the basic function with the magnetic ring on the hub.

Yes - it gives you gearing, so you don't have to look back to see what gear you're in - it's always displayed graphically, and briefly displayed numerically when you shift.
The FlightDeck also gives you virtual cadence, which is helpful, and all the other standard data: avg speed, max speed, distance, elapsed riding time, etc.

I like Sigma. Thay last for years.....
The gear display is really cool on the FlightDeck, but I could live with a computer that dosen't auto start.
I also got an in line gear indicator to take care of that function. LBS gave it to me and it took ten minutes to install.

I'd vote for the Cateye Astrale 8. It has cadence, which is important to me, and the wheel pickup is in the rear so it can go on a trainer. My prior Cateye Solar lasted about 15 years, maybe longer, so I trust the Cateyes.

Ok, maybe $270 is a little steep for a bike computer but it does come with a nifty heart rate monitor as well!

Thanks for the advice all. I'm leaning towards the flight deck because I like knowing what gear I am in without having to look down.
As I improve as a cyclist, I find that I continue to take certain hills, that I travel often, in higher and higher gears. Noticing this improvement and pushing myself has been a valuable experience. Every time I graduate to a higher gear, I feel like I've accomplished something.
That said, I'm sure there are other options besides the flight deck. I'd certainly consider something that portrayed gears as nicely as it does. What does an inline gear indicator look like, does anyone have a picture?
