Trevor, you have my sympathies. I've broken fingers, ribs and toes montain biking but nothing quite comes close to the extreme, eye-watering pain of a full-on pedal in the shin. It is pure, unremitting AGONY http://www.bikeforums.net/images/smilies/biggrin.gif!

I have a hole from a platform pedal pin in my shin that's slowly recovering right now, too. It bled for like 18 hours when I did it...

Rookies!

If chicks dig scars, I'll never be lonely!

I've got scars on top of scars. My shins have DENTs in them from years of riding.

My lower forearms have so much scar tissue, I no longer tan there!

Ok, a2psyklnut, you definitely win this one :) ! However, philosophically speaking, which hurts more? a large light platform pedal with lots of pins/serated edges or a much smaller but very heavy SPD pedal when it cracks into your shin at high speed.

I'd go for heavy SPD...

Pins hurt more. Imo...when the pins drive in a hit the bone peeling open a hole big enough to not stop bleeding for a few weeks and wearing bandages for 3 months and getting infected because of how open it it...I think pins ;)

They could only stitch it INTO a circle...too much skin was missing to pull it together ;)

After the pain I've been through in the past 20 years of my life, I really don't know what was the most painful for me.

Thats not the most painful. I really don't know what is...really the most painful injury was during football...I went up to trap a guy and my finger got caught in his mask and snapped...I never screamed so loud in my life...then I beat the guy down and we got a touchdown (I was an ot)...but man did it hurt...then shock...the painkillers...wrap..and finish the game ...

I guess I have few nerve endings in my shins. When I still played rugby a big guy (about 280 lbs) stepped on my shin with his metal cleats. I wondered what the whitish/yellowish stuff was on my leg. I realized it was the bone. I had it stitched up, without anesthetic and took no pain-killers. I've never actually typed that story out. It's amazing I can type coherent sentences as stupid as I used to be.

The most painful experience I've ever had is a tie between having an eardrum burst (there's nothing worse than being in excrutiating pain and not being able to touch it) and last fall a few days after a car accident when my kidneys weren't working properly and they weren't eliminating the waste products from my body. Almost all of my muscles continually contracted at the same time (cramps in all muscles at once, basically). I had to be taken by ambulance to the hospital. That was extreme pain for about 2 hours straight.

My shins have dents in them from playing soccer for so many years. In X-rays, if you look at the bone there are darker areas, I asked the doctor what it was, and he told me the bone's denser in some areas from all the compression caused from feet and balls that havehit my shins.

yeah, platforms hitting you in the shin hurts like hell. I once had most of the pin pattern of a wellgo pedal imprinted in my left shin and they were deep. I also have a friend who got a deep cut from his pedals, and had to have it medically glued (no joke). I also used to have some really bad platforms on my old bike, they were really sharp and had NO grip, this equals lots of shred marks down legs.

Platforms with pins hurt more. Usually more spread out and the pins tend to rip the flesh as mentioned.

What really kills is slipping a pedal and getting the infamous chainring tattoo.

My "most painful" experience was when I raced BMX. Jumping the table, guy next to me slams into me in the air, I land with the bars turned 90 degree and my groin making impact with the end of the bar.

Rolled on the ground for 20 mins. The size of grapefruits they were! No kidding. Couldn't walk for 2 days, my whole groin was black and blue for weeks. Still amazed I was able to have a kid.

One of the only team sports I like...I loved to play, love to watch...but man did I suck. Its unreal how difficult the game is to see all the players and the whole field, know where the ball is and try and control other human beings physically...man do I miss it...but I sucked.

Gee, Mael, at what level were you playing that, with your size, you couldn't pretty much control anyone you got near?

I liked playing because no other sport gives you the opportunity to dedicate 100% of your physical, mental, and emotional energy into pure, unadulterated violence (directed at a stranger, no less). That probably sounds twisted to most people, but what a release! And people don't really get hurt *that* much considering what's going on out there.

Back on topic: Platforms hurt worse than SPD's, especially on shins already scarred up by football. Taking shin shots is an integral part of mountain biking, though, kind of a rite of passage. Suck it up and keep riding, whiners. Plus, there's a story behind every scar. Wear them like medals of honor.

Highschool only. We had a strong league at that time with 3 players making it to American College (thats damn impressive for a league of 6 teams haha) and at that point 6'5 and 210 I was a tiny player and hadn't filled out yet. I had a weird growth spurt and by grade 8 was 6'5 with big legs and hips but my upper body wouldn't finds its size until I was leaving highschool.

Not twisted at all...oh the joy :D
