I will be riding the MS150 across Missouri for the first time this year. Several cyclists have recommended bringing along some chamois butter (Boudreaux's Butt Paste?). Is this really necessary? Does anyone here use that stuff? What good does it really do?

I guess the lack of responses means no one uses these products on long rides?

Do a search on the forum. This topic has been discussed at length on several, of not dozens, no sorry, infinite occasions! Lots of people swear by them, lots of people don't. Like I said do a search you'll find the topics.

i wouldnt leave home without it. i generally use udder butter, mostly because the drug store down the street happens to sell it, and it works just fine for me. i'd imagine the stuff sold in an LBS probably would work just fine as well.

Chamois Butt'r. Other brands work well, too. Especially if you haven't done lots of long rides, make sure you take some. You may want to put some in a small bottle or zip lock bag to carry with you so you can reapply it. If you chafe on the first day, the second day could be really miserable.

Post chafe treatment--- Desitin diaper rash cream. I would cary it just in case.

Glorified lotion. My girlfriend tried it because she gets saddle sores. She tried it and didn't like it at all. Said it was nothing more than glorified lotion. She returned it and is planning on getting zinc oxide. Not sure what for...but that was her take on it.

it's not glorified lotion.

real chamois cream is a heavy lubricant that lasts a long time, it's anti-bacterial and it will provide a bit of a cooling effect to the applied regions.

I packed an old prescription medicine bottle with Chamoix Butt'r for a recent two-day, 230-mile journey. I applied it on three separate occasions during a seven-hour rain. It's worth its weight in gold.
