My buddy bailed on me for the Conejo Century, so now I am looking at riding all by myself. Anyone from North OC doing the Century ride? I am 35, not too fast, not too slow and will probably complete the ride in 6 to 6-1/2hrs. It sure would be nice to have someone to talk to, even if its just at the rest areas.

I'd love to see a route map for this century. However, I couldn't find one on the website.

Hi All

I will be doing the century for the first time this Saturday. I think I can handle the climbs, but I heard really nasty things about the some of the descents where you can really take a spill if your not careful.

For those with experience, what's the best approach to this steep descent? Would riding the brakes help, or should I just get off my bike and walk some of the way down?

Thanks and good luck to you!

I think you should do what you feel comfortable doing. The climbing can be steep and tiring so just pace yourself. There is a point where many just get off and walk up but if in the right gear, there is no need to do that. The descents can be a bit scary so if you must, just keep your hands on your brakes and slow down as needed. Ride with a good head on your shoulders and have fun.

Agreed....do whatever you are comfortable with. No one will really care.

The big descents for the century are:

Down Encinal from the Mulholland split...a few miles but not super steep.
Down Decker/Westlake....several miles....this is a tough one. Just take your time. It has some decreasing radius turns and one very steep 18% section near the bottom that you will ride your brakes on. But that part is shortish.
Down Potrero to Camarillo. The top mile or so but nicely paved. It's a long way to the bottom but most isn't any problem.

Note that CVC generally posts someone at the top of these drops to remind you to use caution. (but not always!)
