Road Cycling - Brakes, the Most Important Component

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

having read this forum, and having heard the awful sound of my brakes grinding along the rims of my new specialized, i decided to order some koolstop brake pads. but being the lazy b@st@rd that i am, didn't put them on the bike. last wednesday went biking w/ my friend (who rides an MTB, but slowly becoming a convert) around greenvale, roslyn, and pt. washington. we start bombing down northern blvd into downtown roslyn when i think "OEM brake pads suck, i better check 'em). pulling back on the reins, i get the bike down to a steady 30 mph, barrel down the exit ramp and finally get down to a low enough speed so i can do my best fred flintstone impression and jam my heels to the pavement to stop before flying through a busy intersection. after our ride i went home and threw the kool stops on immediately.

if my brakes blow, I'd just downshift.

glad both you and your bike came out of that unharmed.

I put new Ultegra pads on but didn't sandpaper them until recently.
The new pads work so much better after a bit of sanding.

Shimano has two types of brake pads. one makes sanding noise and one actually stops.. Someone should sue them! For me it is koolstop all around..
here is a good writeup about it from Chain Reaction (http://www.chainreaction.com/brakeshoes.htm)..

G'day,

'fixie' riders might well disagree with with the title of your thread!.....On the other note, I've got DA brake pads & have never had an issue, further the DA brakes & pads on the DA 10 (is it 7800?) gruppo, are probably better than the current record....(and about time too!)

cheers,
