Road Cycling - good road tires for the rain?

i currently have a set of vittoria rubino pros on my roadbike, but i noticed that i have a bit of a hole in the rear tire (so sad after less than 1000 miles/2 months).

anyway, i live in portland, and the rains are beginning to swing in.

i'm looking for a good, solid tire set that i can use in the slop that won't drag too much and at the same time has some protection against sliding out from under me. i'm guessing that that's a tall order for a 700c, eh?

at the same time, i'm doing a series of centuries in the next 2 months, so i'd like to make sure that they don't work against me a bunch, either.

any suggestions? i'm not too concerned about the cost difference between a 35 and 55 dollar tire, but i would like to try to get more than 2000 miles out of 'em this time.

Bump to this. Best clincher tyres, period.

I second the vote for the continental gp 4 seasons.
They are very sticky in the wet after the tread wears down.
I had 17 days in wet weather on these tires and had full confidence in them, including 2 fast descents off of Figueroa Mtn road.

Stick with the Vittoria's. I just got a set of "Vittoria Rubino Pros", which are very popular where I live, and for good reason. They are very reasonably priced, and have a nice center slick design, with a great side tread, specifically for rain. They really work great for me, because I live near Seattle, so you can imagine how much wet road riding I do.
I like the regular Rubinos too, they are good for touring and training. But, I upgraded to the Pros because they have a kevlar 120tpi count. I live in the country where some roads have a bit of debris, so the extra kevlar comes in handy.

Personally, the Michelin Pros are nice and sticky and are great in wet weather. Just a personal preference, as I have ridden a number of other tires, but have not ridden Vittoria's...

i live in pdx also and ride year round...both of my bikes have vittorio rubinos on them and i have no problem riding in the rain with them....granted, im usually in downtown or riding up in the washington park area so im not usually screaming down hills...thats a bad idea in the rain anyway...ive had great luck with the rubinos thus far and don't forsee getting new tires for the impending season of doom, oh, i meant winter....;) good luck...

Michelin Pro Race. You are looking for a great all-around tire. I am guessing you are not planning on switching tires every time it looks like rain.

The best tires are the ones who's hands are on the handlebars. Superior bike handling in the wet is what counts...

Michelin pro race are terrific...but I trained for 2 years on Specialized Armadillos...and those suckers ran over EVERYTHING

i ordered a set of michelins today, so we'll see how they compare.
