Road Cycling - Trek 5500 vs. 5200

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I am considering a Trek 5500 (Dura-Ace or Campy) versus a Trek 5200 (Ultegra) for a new bike. Obvioiusly, the 5200 comes at a much better price point and I have been riding Ultegra for 11 years.
Does anyone have any serious reasons to move to Dura-Ace or Campy and pay the increased price? I don't see much of a difference between the 5500 and the 5200 otherwise.
Thanks.
I wasn't even aware you could get Campy on Treks? Is this stateside?

With Project One you can.

if you're going to pay for dura ace or campy, i'd get a 5900 and get the better carbon frame. weight difference b/w them all is negligible--nothing a better set of wheels couldn't erase in a heartbeat.

I have a 5200 and could not see the benefit in buying the 5500. Riding wise, I doubt you will spot the difference as the frames are exactly the same. It comes down to cost and prestige.

g'day,
agree with wattsy, I was under the impression that they were the same frames, the different No's signalling a deifferent level of componentry. I think I'd be tempted to get the Ultegra (if you must have a Trek!), Ult. 10sp is due in Nov, so you may find you can negotiate a 'better' deal on the 9 sp as they'll be wanting to 'move' it before the new stuff arrives. With the $$ you save, perhaps invest in some better wheels than whatever the 5200 comes with (in Oz I think it's Shimano 540's or bontrager cheapies),
cheers,
Hitchy
PS....hey Wattsy, given we just had the warmest August nite in 120 years....you tempted out of the garage yet?
FWIW - I've heard that Trek is discontinuing the 5200 (not sure about the 5900).

The 55 has a better fork. Other than that, I couldn't see the benefit (given the cost) of going w/DA. So, my 55 has Ultegra. And it's candy apple red. No 52 is that color.

If you are smart, you will wait a bit until the end of the year for the 10 speed Ultegra.
I ride the new Dura Ace. It IS worth it.

I'd get the 5.2SL with Ultegra 10sp.
Huh. I have a 5200 and I'm going to upgrade to DA. Does that mean I have to upgrade the decals too?

You could do a better job of it then Trek does.

I agree with pgreen. I have a 5900 and my wife has a 5200. I can feel the ride difference between the 5900 and 5200 (it's great to be the same size as me wife :) ), but doubt I'll feel much difference between the 5200 and 5500.

I always thought the 5500s felt "dead" - not really lively like my (at the time) klein quantum

ROFL, I didn't notice the date at all, but I was scratching my head while reading it asking myself, "What are they talking about? The 10 sp has been out for ages!"

I look forward to 2012 threads about how DA 7900 is still frigging vapourware
