Road Cycling - 105 to Dura Ace

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have a question that I am hoping someone can answer. I have a Lemond Buenos Aires that I am upgrading the drivetrain on. Everything was 105 from the factory. I found a smoking deal on an '03 Dura Ace triple crankset/cassette/chain combo, and ordered it.
However, I was told by someone today that I may have to replace my 105 shifters, too, since the chainrings on the Dura Ace are different (53/39/30) than my 105 chainrings (52/42/30). Anyone had any experience with this?
I am willing to replace the front derailer, if need be, but I don't want to spend the $250+ that Dura Ace shifters would cost. That is almost what I paid for the rest of the drivetrain.

G'day,
Ok..I give up!...can someone explain to me why you need to change the shifters cos the chainrings are different sizes????
cheers,

What speed is the crank? My 105 crank is kinda of messed up and this would be a great replacement if you are selling it.
Give me a price.

Don't you mean what length?

My BS detector went off quick on that one.
You don't need to replace the shifters.
But the front der will have to be adjusted to work correctly with the difference in big ring teeth.

g'day,
mmm my point precisely!....methinks someone is just trying to justify some nice shiny new DA shifters!,

Thanks for the replies. I was kind of thinking (and hoping) that was the answer. As far as my crank is concerned, it's a triple 170mm. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it, other than some wear on the chainrings. Email me at rlinkenhoker@comcast.net. I will take a look at it when I pull it and let you know what I think it's worth.

The shifters should work fine. If there are any problems, it would be with the rear shifter, not the front.
That said, keep your eyes out for some DA shifters. You will notice a much bigger difference between shifters than any other component on your bike IMHO. I upgraded to DA 9 speed in '98 and it's still silky smooth.

Who ever told you that the shifters need to be replaced is full of poop! Just like every one else said, your 105's should work just peachy.

Thanks for the input. I would hope the shifters make a big diff, given their price. I am getting a new DA 9sp crank, cassette and chain for $279 (smoking deal, IMHO) but I can't find the shifters for less than $250 anywhere.
