A bicyclist killed yesterday during a Highland traffic collision was a 27-year-old professional cyclist from Ontario, according to San Bernardino County coroner's officials.
Jorge Alvarado was riding along the west shoulder of Greenspot Road when he was hit at 9:52 a.m. Thursday by a northbound vehicle whose driver had lost control and crossed into the southbound lanes, then continued onto the shoulder of the road, coroner's investigators said in a written statement.
Alvarado died in a field about a half-mile east of Santa Ana Canyon Road. He was a member of the Bahati Foundation Pro Cycling Team. The team includes international cycling champion Floyd Landis, according to the foundation's website.

Frigging moron teenagers strike with idiocy and recklessness yet again. I know kids are stupid and irresponsible but it really pisses me off when the consequences of their actions are so great. It sucks that this guy was a pro but it could've been any cyclist, any one of us.

No one has been arrested. The investigation is expected to take several weeks, and the reports will be forwarded to the district attorney's office for a decision on what criminal charges, if any, will be filed, sheriff's officials say.

this country needs to take the issuing of drivers licenses much more serious.. like in other countries that have far fewer fatal car accidents..
my friend in oregon was walking his bike, on the side walk, and some street racer did the same exact thing, my friend got brained really bad, nearly died, but by some miracle and of course ambulance and ER services, has survived and is healthy aside from emotional trauma of nearly dying at the hands of some nit wit that comes hurtling out of nowhere, anyways, that street racer is doing 8 years I believe....
Redlands is my hometown, I called my dad to see if he had heard anything and the local papers were making it sound like an accident, not street racing. I just hope the a-hole spends the next 25 years in jail but we all know it will probably be probation.

Redlands has a pretty big bike race every year that just finished a couple of weeks ago (http://www.redlandsclassic.com/). I'd be surprised if charges aren't filed against the guy. And maybe the other drivers that were racing too.

Jorge was a former teammate and friend of a current teammate of mine. He sent out the link.
