we had to evacuate our building today for a drill. one of the requirements of the drill was to show people how to leave the building by using the stairs. well going down was fine for everyone - just the typical amount of complaining you would expect. going back up was a different story. people were hostile that they had to take the stairs, some were so out of breath at the top they looked ready to pass out, and plenty others made comments like "if i ever have to do this again i'm going to quit". amonst all the wheezing and belabored breathing it struck me just how pathetic it all was. i mean, there were a few people that almost couldn't do it. (climb 7 flights of stairs) :(

You should have that drill about 3 times a week and cure the problem -;)

Funny and yes sad too. I would'nt mind a drill everyonce and awhile just to get outside :)
It is funny how people cannot see the health problem this country faces. It is so plane, right in front of their face. I feel very sorry for my children and theirs because the cost of health care is going to skyrocket in the next 10 years. People simply do not get enough exercise! (Get on your bikes and ride!)

Did anyone see this on Entertainment Tonight?
NICKI ROBERTS is the goddess in question on Wednesday night's show. Over the past year, she has doubled her weight and is now at 363.5 pounds, with her goal weight between 500-600 pounds.
Nicki explains that she was envious after seeing confident, plus-sized women, so she has made it her mission to become as big as possible. Despite doctor's warnings, the goddess devours 14,000 calories a day. "It wouldn't be uncommon for me to get excited if I split my pants ot a button pops off," she reveals. Nicki and her husband even plan on moving to a larger house to accomodate all the space required to put her cookies, bags of chips, and other high calorie foods

I guess she even drinks a 3,500 calorie shake before she goes to bed!
Her husband is okay with this! Last month ( If I remember correctly) she spent $5,000 on new clothes.
It makes me sick.
What can we do to help the obese population see their demise? Not only see, but it get them to fix it?

This is wonderful news, less competition for me.

Nothing you say to an obese person will have the impact to change their lifestyle. It has to come from within themselves. Trust me. I know this first hand.
I think education will help. More public announcement, ect.....

Hey what it took me to get off my fat butt and start working towards being healthy once again was my doctor telling me I wouldn't live to see 40 if I kept going the way I was. Basically I was wreck...no 24 year old should be told that hes highly likely to have a liver transplant by the time he's 30. That's all it took to get me off the couch and into an excerise routine and to lay off the liquor.
Maybe these folks need to go get a physical, once the doctor tells them how bad they suck, maybe they will get up and do somethng about it too.
I REALLY THINK people that CHOOSE unhealthy way should be fined.

That's a really good question. Unfortunately, with the capitalist method of consumerism, I think it's impossible for most people. Advertising, availability, and a general lack of taking "Critical Thinking" in college(or college in general) leaves most of the American public susceptible. If they don't know they are out of controll on health issues(because of marketing/corporate image), how or why would they change?

You're exactly correct. I compare it to alcoholism and "hitting rock bottom." Until that time comes and the person decides for themselves "I will no longer live this way," nothing will change. I also speak from first-hand knowledge on this topic. That's why so many diets fail - it's not usually the way of eating that doesn't work, it's the lack of motivation of the person doing it. I'm no psych major, but I'd bet that many people who are very overweight - especially the morbidly obese - have other issues as well (self worth, depression, etc.). So, I honestly don't know that there is an easy answer. What this Nicki Roberts woman is doing, however, is absolutely insane...

Hey, everybody ought to have a goal. :D
MMPC, I agree. It took being diagnosed with diabetes to bring about a paradigm shift in my life. To change one's lifestyle is scary! I still get nerves when in new situations. I did my first MTB race last September. That was a HUGE step outside of my comfort zone! I have yet to bring myself to join the local bike club because of the metal demons I still battle.
I'm not quite sure what the motivation of Nicki Roberts is. Publicity perhaps? Can't say. Insane? Perhaps not by the clinical definition, but I would think not far from it. Suicidal may be a better word to use.
There is no easy mass solution. It is an individual battle the many of us wage daily.

So how does cycling and diabetes work with each other? I always wondered since sports is very carb dependant, and in general (at least from what little understanding of it I have, which is very little at all) diabetics tend to have very low carb diets...how exactly does that work?

This story reminds me of the the 1FMFs in my building. The people who get on the elevator to go up (or worse, go down) one floor when the stairs are right next to the elevator.
Elevators should be made to stop at every other floor :)

Hey the fat people are acting as a renewable oil source. We can just render them into petrol when they die of a heart attack. The petrol can then be used to generate electricity and run elevators. So instead of burning off the fat walking up the stairs they burn the fat lifting other fat people with elevators, its a perfect circle.

Another annoying things is that many places don't make stairwell locations well known or the doors are often locked. It's a pain waiting for an elevator when I would rather take the stairs.
Lufty, exactly! I agree with your statement. I think that until people realize that all the marketing investment of the big companies that mass-produce food products are only out to get the masses money (get rich) it will stay out of control.
Why wouldn't the Health insurance companies start a campaign to promote good health? That would be in their best interest. Maybe they could give special rates to those who take care of them self by watching their diet and exercising.
I think that MERTON has an idea: Reward the people who take care of themselves and penalize the people who don't.

I wish we could. However, I'm afraid in some cases obesity is so genetically ingrained it takes almost super human effort to overcome it.
If our gov't ever does offer health insurance a requirement could be that participants pass a basic fitness test.

The Libertarian in me says, yes, go ahead and reward the people who take care of themselves. But don't explicitly penalize those who don't. At some point you have to leave free will in the equation, or we'll all turn into uninteresting automatons that eat the same foods, perform the safest exercise and think the same things. No thanks.

it's only free if i don't have to pay for it (yes i know what free you meant).
also, just because a person is fat doesn't mean they aren't healthy. i saw a marathon runner once that was fat. he never won but he finished the race. being fat isn't so unhealthy as making yourself fat.

Merton, we all luv ya here but, what??? :D:p
if you have good cardio health and do excercise, even though you may be genetically predisposed to being fat and are actually fat, you will still be healthy. people don't look at health, they look at looks.
people were hostile that they had to take the stairs, some were so out of breath at the top they looked ready to pass out,
Reminds me of myself. 10 years ago I raced Cat. 4 and was 145-155lb depending on training. I stopped racing and got married to a woman who wasn't active. As a result I ate more, dinner wasn't done until dessert was served and why eat one meat pie when two is twice as good.
Bam, I was 235 within 6 years. It didn't hit me until I switched jobs from a 1 floor building to a 4 floor building with a really slow elevator. Everyone takes the stairs because the elevator is so slow. If I didn't slow down between Floor 3 and 4 I'd be out of breath and sweating as I entered the 4th floor meeting room.
Alarm bells went off in my head and I'm now down to a correct BMI for my height.

Yeah, I figured that's what you meant, just wanted to give you a hard time. :p I guess I'd actually fit that description myself. I'm still about 40 pounds above my ideal weight, but consider myself reasonably healthy after riding for nearly a year (and losing 50+ pounds!). I also agree that some people have it harder than others when it comes to losing/maintaining an ideal weight - like me. But, having said that, I also know that plenty of fat people use genetics as a crutch and became that way because of poor eating habits, no exercise, etc. Again, I can speak from the heart here because I just described myself less than a year ago!

That is another thread all together. :D It is a rather complex topic.
PLEASE MAKE SUch a thread. i am interested as well.
It's sad about the woman trying to gain so much weight...but how is it any worse than eating disorders that revolve around being thin? Anorexia is about control, right? So she's proving that overeating isn't about a lack of control, it's a choice. My guess is that it's her backlash against the beauty standard. I recall websites about anorexics encouraging each other and sharing tips on how little or what to eat without dying just to stay thin and pretty. The only difference I can see is that we accept being thin as naturally healthier, in control, and more attractive.

I understood...and its good to see someone gets it. I have always been overweight occording the dreaded and evil bmi. I do in fact carry excess FAT...but I am not unhealthy. Never have been and doubt I ever will be.
Heck I can think of lots of athlete who are very healthy and athletic but still 'fat'...

I'm just as alarmed and disgusted by someone who's sickly thin as the woman who's killing herself (and I don't say that lightly) by trying to gain hundreds of pounds (I believe her goal is 600?). While I'm sure some of the horror comes from her going against societal norms for body image, she's also showing she doesn't care about her health in any way whatsoever. Oh, and her husband appears to be an absolute dolt. I guess it could all be a publicity stunt - but to what end?

Maybe the whole 600lb woman stunt is just an example of how screwed up our society has gotten...that people would rather be known for something as stupid and disturbing as this, instead of knowing that they have done the right thing.
But again....we live in an era where people actually watch this reality TV garbage....

Bleh!
That's all I have to say to this about weight...and I used to live in the 5th floor of my dorm, let me tell you, climbing THOSE stairs was an ass. I never attempted the full nine.
That said, I don't look over or underweight. When I say I"m 150, people autmatically assume the latter, though. In fact, the former is true.
How many calories per day do I assume? Depends on the day. I have perhaps the oddest metabolism on the planet, I"m probably going to suddenly DIE as soon as I get out of my teenage youth.
I've passed college semesters with an average of two out of every 24 hours asleep with no problem. On the other hand, if I get the time I"ll sleep 18 hours straight. It seems like the more calories I consume, the less I need to snooze.
The principal item in my diet is the double bacon cheeseburger with fries. I generally feed the bun to the birds on campus, and get my daily vegan input snitching from the cafeteria and a constant supply of apples. I'm on a not-eating phase right now, which means one burger, one box of fries, two apples, a gallon or so of water is my daily food input.
In about two weeks, I'll probably go onto an eating phase, which means six meals a day, heavy on the meat and raw vegetables marinated in salad dressing, and I'll spice up my water with some root beer with the meals. If I miss one of my six meals, I'll be acutely hungry and feel like I'm on the point of death in about two hours.
On the other hand...on my 'not eating' phase, I can forget my one meal and not notice for half a day or more.
....it all seems so backwards but whatcha gonna do.

Around here, a 600 pound woman is not a stunt, just a sad fact of life. I believe eveyone should have the freedom to live their life the way they want to, just as long as it does not hurt others. But I look at these behemoths and think that the extra poundage they carry could feed an entire Somali village for a month (600# - 150# healthy weight x 3500 calories/pound = 1,575,000 calories!) This is 1050 days of 1500 calories per day!
And when their bodies breakdown under the stresses imposed by the excess tonnage, it will be my tax dollars paying for the Fire & Rescue Team to cut them out of their houses, paying for the special ambulances to transport them, paying for the medical care, and the care of their orphaned offspring.
Plus, these whales are usually the ones honking at me when I ride. Envy?
