Howdy,

I've been flip flopping on SS/FG vs. multi-gear/urban and I'm thinking that I'm too new and casual to do SS/FG. I'm going to start with a good bike and make my way up to great bikes over time (be they SS/FG or still multigear)

I've managed to narrow my selection down to 3 bikes, only two of which I can test out before buying:
1. KHS Urban Xtreme (http://www.khsbicycles.com/06_urban_xtreme_10.htm) (none of these are in stock in my city)
2. Devinci Stockholm (http://www.devinci.com/bikes/browse#4_10_24)
3. Trek 7.3 FX (http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/bike_path/fx/73fx/)

See my components sheet: https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AtBSAF76dPK1dEE1MmViQTZDUDlzUDFaSnZKRXV3c0E&hl=en

Can anybody comment? I think all 3 are nice looking bikes. I rode the Stockholm today, and I'm going to ride the Trek 7.3 tomorrow, and the Stockholm again.
I like the looks of the Trek, KHS, Devinci. Only the wheel give the KHS the lead over the devinci... it's way nicer of a colour in person (that matte gray)

The KHS has road bike gearing.
The other two have touring bike gearing.

I know I'm going to sound like I put my brain in a blender... but what's the difference between road and touring?

The bike will be used for 3 things:

Commuting to work (20km of mostly-flat land)
Cruising around the 'burbs with the girlfriend
Short cyclethons (for charity 'n such, no racing, but reasonably hilly on the routes they use)

Any of the bikes will work well for your intended uses.
How many bike shops have you visited? How many bikes did you test ride?

I'm voting for the 7.3 mainly because I just bought one 3 weeks ago and love it. The other ones look comparable though. Prices are fairly close. Good luck

I've been out on about a half-dozen. My issue is that my price-point is pretty low ($600cad) and many places don't carry XL sized bikes.
There's about 14 bike shops in town, and I've been to 8 of them, so far. 1, I refuse to go to, and the rest have weird hours that don't work with my work-hours. I'll hit up a couple more, but in the $600 range, those are the three that compete.

The Jamis Coda is $600 US (~$605 CDN). It's an awesome bike. Before I retired from working at a local bike shop we sold LOTS of these to people who planned using it as a commuter/utility/charity ride bike.

If you can find a leftover 2009 it would be ~$500.

You poop!! Now that's another bike to consider!

I've eliminated the KHS because I just don't want a brown bike, and I'm not a big fan of buying a bike I can't sit on before spending the cash.
The kicker on the DeVinci is that when I buy from the store that sells them, I also get 20% off all accessories (of which I have none)... so that's some coin saved.

I'm going to go try a 2009 Coda Comp for $600. It was $800, but discounts rock :)

Turns out the Coda Comp wasn't $600, but $950... the $600 one was a 2009 Coda which isn't really any better than a Devinci Stockholm... and Devinci is Canadian, so it does get a few bonus points.
The store that sells Jamis, also has a pretty bad rep, it seems.

I'm 95% on the Devinci Stockholm bike. Seems to be the winner with the 20% off discount on all accessories :)

... and I bought the Stockholm :D
