where do i dumpster dive for discarded bikes in san jose?

of course there are the obvious metal scrapyards found through yelp and google maps, but are there any secret locations or unadvertised dump spots? or are there any spots that happen to yeild more results then others?

wanna do some restoration projects but dont wanna pay bay area prices for old parts and frames.

not to mention there's such a thrill involved with finding an old bike.

help me out guys!

I'm always amazed at the various "What did you find in the dumpster?" stories. I wish I could help, but I can't remember the last time I saw a bike in a dumpster...not that I do a lot of dumpster hunting. I think your post is akin to standing on the docks and asking all the fishermen where the fish are. Nobody is going to reveal their favorite dumpster (did I just say favorite dumpster?), just as no fisherman worth his salt will tell you his favorite place to drop a line. Without revealing specific locations, maybe someone could give some general advice about types of areas or dumpsters where abandoned bikes are more likely to be found. My two cents (and not from experience): Last day of semester near your local college would make for a good start.

Check with the haulers for the housing authority. They pull loads of bikes from their houses all the time.
