I know it varies by area, but what would you guys think a rough value of a 1985, Trek 660 that is original and in decent shape?
I dont have a picture of it yet, but Im looking for something to replace the Schwinn Tempo I was redoing.

Really as funny as this might sound, it depends on the color (which indicates the components). The 660 was a full 531cs bike so the frame is great, but the red ones came with Ofmega Mistral drivetrain and the awful Modolo Speedy brakes. The (harder to find) green ones came with Suntour Superbe. I'd say about $250-300 for the red ones (you basically buying frame and wheels) and $300-$400 for the green ones. Since you live across the river from Portland, you got to add a hefty premium.

In Philly...I'd say about $400 depending on components, time of the year and condition.

Thanks, I was wondering how the Mistral stuff was. I was thinking I might switch out with my 105 stuff from the Tempo. I know I would like the cranks if I could make the change, and I like the 105 brakes. I want to upgrade to Sora brifters which I have. They seemed to be fine with the the 105's when I tested them on the Tempo.
I actually am looking for a red bike, so I am hoping I get a follow up email on the bike.
105 on this bike will be great. The SLR brakes are light years ahead of the Speedy's and the drivetrain is much better than Mistral. It will work with the Mistral crankset and it is mostly a matter of preference. If you like Biopace, the 105 is the way to go, otherwise, the Ofmega will work. I am fairly neutral about Ofmega stuff, but there are a lot of people who do not care about it and I have not heard of a single person who would outright recommend it. (On the other hand, those Modolo brakes are a POS.)
Here is a link for a little market research. It's a 1989 with 600 components -- exactly the same as mine. Not entirely on point with 1985. I will guess that this will go for $300-350.

apples and oranges :) The '89 had a double butted 4130 True Temper frame and 7sp Shimano 600 index components (plus on the components, minus on the frame), the '85 had a full 531cs frameset and the components (friction) indicated. Maybe a wash with the Modolo/Ofmega equipt one, but if one finds an '85 with Superbe, it will worth more than the '89

I'm well aware of that. As I said, not on point. However, I have watched auctions on many 660's and the older ones come in lower than the 1989's. Frankly, I think the 1989 is a better bike, unless you need the 531 label.

For some reason True Temper frames never get the recognition they deserve and Superbe is almost a cult item (Lots of Suntour friction fans out there). But as riders (and this is a personal preference) as far as I am concerned, I'd take the '89...

Damn! I was just getting ready to come back to the computer to expound further for the benefit of the less astute, and you just laid out my 1989 analysis. Now I'm going to have to pick on someone else.
I agree with you completely about the tricolor. I have four sets of tricolor and even use the RD's with 9-speed. No problem. The stuff just goes and goes and goes. And, I think it's pretty as far as components go. Also, at a personal level, I prefer the sharper "crit" angles on the 1989 (73.5/73.5).
But, again, watching the auctions, the 1989's come out higher than the 531's.

I'm really wanting a bike, but I have time and I'm also selling a few things on Ebay so the amount I'm going to be able to spend is growing every time one of my items sells. So I'm going to wait until I either find a bike that has a great frame and everything in one package cheap or till I have enough $$$ saved to have my choice of whatever bike I find that fits my goals. Still I'm finding it difficult to find my size which ideally is a 55 cm however I can go 56 cm. It seems like I see all kinds that are one size too small or too large.

Agreed, but those are the Ofmega/Modolo '85 bikes, not the Superbe ones. Hard to find the latter...
I had a '85 660. Bought it as a frame set. Fantastic riding bike and super tight geometry. I built it as a fixed gear first and had to remember the toe overlap. Put 9 speed on it for awhile and would never have sold it if it was 1 size bigger.
Sold the frame on the bay for $175.
I sold a blue 1988 660 w/ tricolor 600, 531 frame for $300 on local CL, in summer in SoCal.
