Kath and I did 76 today with 6K of climbing including Mt. Diablo and Morgan Territory (for you Northern Cal folks). The first 20 miles, man I felt like crawling off and rolling up in the fetal position. No power, heart racing, just generally feeling like crap.

This has been going on for some time. I did my double on my fixie two weeks ago and felt fine. One thing I did do on that ride...I made sure I ate well. And I used Perpetuem. I also did today. We stopped mid-way and had lunch. I had a chicken burrito and made sure I had a lot of protein in the morning. By that I mean, two eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt and oatmeal.

All, I can say is, I did OK after the initial 2000' climb up Diablo (we didn't climb the whole thing due to bad weather at the top. Good excuse for me anyway). What would happen is when we started climbing my heart felt like it was racing (HR Monitor never went over 150) and then I'd have no power in the legs.

So, I sure want to know what the hell is going on with me. I'm away for business next week but when I get back (after a double on next Saturday), I'm going back to Kaiser. First time I did, they found nothing wrong with me. Said I was in great shape...

Hi Dan, I hope you find the answer at Kaiser. Are you doing Hemet?

Hemet? Nah, never again. I've done it three times and that's two times more than I should've... ;-(

My morning resting HR this morning was 49 and my morning standing HR was 66, so an orthostatic HR of 17, which is in my normal, fairly rested range. (We didn't ride yesterday.) My completely rested MRHR is 44 and my overworked MRHR is 54+. My definitely overworked orthostatic HR is 10 or less. Stoker and I did a nice 54 mile ride today, and both our climbing HRs were in the 154-160 range, and we are in our 60s, with MHRs of around 168. These are just some numbers for comparison and your delectation.

Take 10 days completely off the bike, don't do that double, and see how that works. You're cooked.

Say, carbon fiber, how long have you been riding?

I've ridden a good bit; commuted from school to our Alaskan homestead on my 20" girls bike over gravel roads. I guess I was 8-10 y/o. Spent a lot of time in the saddle until I was about 15. Then I rode in college on a great all-Record Legnano that I wish I still had. Then I stopped and didn't ride until I turned 50, when I stumbled on the way to the mailbox one day and said that's enough of that crap. I've been participating in and leading hard group and LD rides for about 13 years. We bought our used CoMo about 3 years ago. This is our first year leading group tandem rides.
