Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - 1990 Team ADR Bottechia bike - Is there a market for this bike?

Hello All,
I'm new to the forum and after a post to an existing thread, someone suggested I start a new thread with my questions.

I am the original owner of a 1990 Team ADR Bottecchia bike. I bought it and then shortly after started a family and have just ridden it infrequently over the last 20 years. I am starting to get back into biking and the last few rides I realized how nice some of the newer bikes are for riding the hills of San Diego.

I took the bike to the LBS to see if I could just change out some of the components and keep the bike. They said by the time I spread the frame, built a new wheel, and purchased all the other parts to make it more hill friendly, I might as well buy a new bike.

The bike has all the original parts and is in really good shape for a 20 year old bike. (That's because it probably has less only around 500 miles total.

It's a beautiful bike and I'd prefer to find someone that realizes the history of it. Is there a market for bikes like this? Any ideas what the value of it might be?

The pictures below show all the original parts. (I currently have a different rear cassette on it hoping it made the hills a little easier. I'll put it back on if I decide to sell,)

Let me know what you guys think I should do with the bike. I hate to let it go, but if I do buy a new bike, i'd probably never ride it again.

Value will be very dependant on your local market and method of sale. Craigslist vs. Ebay.

is it a Triomphe or G.S. RD? I don't have any reference material with me. off to velobase. the brakes say GS. nice looking ride but not the most sought out frame material or components. I kind of agree with Jim

I found my receipt from 5/5/1990 and it says I paid $750 for the bike.

Google the two models. Google Campagnolo catalogs from 1988 or 1989. Compare them to yours, along with any markings on them. Velobase.com has quite a few Campy pictures (and a 1990 catalog).

Nice bike, towards the lower end of a really good brand (so pretty decent, but not high end). In a good bike market, you should do just fine on Craigs List. ebay is a hassle unless you are really experienced with their set up. +1 Jim's range. In a good market, I would probably ask $375 or $400 on C/L, and see what response you get. Patience is rewarded on C/L.

If you have the original paperwork, it might list the components used on the bike as well.

sorry I should have worded that better. the cranks and shifters look like Triomphe. the rearderaileur looks different than I recall so I am not sure of the model/group.

I just looked about on Velobase. this RD must be some variation of a graphite finish Triomphe or Victory.

not that I am a fan of doing this anyway, I don't think that would be the case here. I don't think Gran Sport brakes, Triomphe cranks and shifters, Gipieme hubed wheels are much sought after parts.

did saswad disappear? did one you Bottechia fans or resellers buy this? I sent a PM strongly hinting that I was interested in it, and asking about the size and seatpost got one reply and that was it. I know it is not an overly nice model but I would like to add a Bottechia in my family and I always liked this color.

this looks like a 61 or 62 cm frame from here...

Those nuovo Gran Sport brakes are curious. They are about 5-8 years older than the rest of the bike. And the other components were last made around '88. I think that either this was a frame set assembled by a bike store with Campy stuff laying around or it came with Shimano components (like a lot of Italian bikes in the early 90s) which were stripped and replaced. Hard to tell what the headset and BB are from here, but these are the 2 things most likely to remain original in a frameset.

I was thinking perhaps someone bought the frameset and put the parts from their bike on it. the BB is stamped 59 and he was double checking that

but who knows for sure.

Sorry to be MIA. I was at a conference all week and wasn't able to get to my pc.

I was able to find out the seat post is Gipiemme. I will take a picture and upload it to this location.

The frame is definitely stamped 59 and the receipt says 59 CtoC. I measured from the center of the crank to the top of the seat post sleeve and it is just short of 24". I measured from the center of the crank to the center of the crossbar and it was roughly 22".
I bought the bike directly from Jax Biclycle Center in Long Beach, CA. As far as I know, everything on the bike was original and was not pieced together. Since I wasn't there when the bike was assembled, I'm assuming they were telling the truth. They had my level bike as well as the higher end frame there and it sure appeared that the major/only difference between the bikes was the frame. It was 20 years ago, so I may be mistaken, but that's what I recall.
I'd be happy to take some additional pictures of some of the components if you tell me what you are looking for. (You may need to be real specific as I may not know exactly what you are asking if you assume I know all the bike terms I probably should know.)
I'm a very honest person, so I'm not going to blow smoke anywhere. I'll be happy to take a picture of the receipt so you see what I see.

One correction to my last post. The center of the crank to the center of the top bar is closer to 22.5", not 22".
Also, the headset also appears to be Gipiemme.

The only thing that has been changed out on this bike since it came home new from the store is I had my LBS put on a different crankset. I still have the original that came with the bike. It is a 13,15,17,19,21,23 cluster. I'll probably put the original back on if I'm going to sell it so it can be completely stock.

I looked for any visible identification on the bottom bracket and i can't see anything. There's no lettering anywhere that I can see.

Are you sure that you bought the bike in '90 instead of '86-'87? This would agree more with the components and the 6 (vs. 7) speed freewheel.

No, I definitely bought it in 1990. 5/5/90 to be exact. I'll post the photo of the receipt later tonight or tomorrow. You can also tell from the photo above (#16) that lists 89 on the logo. I think that's the logo that celebrates Lemond's tour victory. I know/remember them saying that this is the bike he rode in his tour victory. (the much higher end frame of course.)

the decal does not celebrate his tour victory but rather his victory in the world road bike championships, that is what the 'rainbow' stripes are for.

personally for this bike I find the exact year to be a nonissue.

OH the shop changed the freewheel not the cranks

Based on the 1989 World Championship on the decal and the fact that saswad bought it 5/5/90 that pretty much guarantees it's a 1990 model. Like Bianchigirll says though, it doesn't much matter as they didn't change much from around '87 - '92. Based on my super secret Bottecchia pricing database I agree with MiamiJim as well. Just a hunch but I suspect Carnielli bought a boatload of Campy parts in the late 80's and used them until they ran out so I'm not surprised the components don't exactly match the year of the frame.

REALLY BIG boat load of parts? :) I'm afraid the other pictures I have of that particular model are not detailed enough to make out the brakes and are probably earlier than 1990 anyway so who knows?

I have the identicle bike to the OP's, frame, color, components. I'll venture a guess and say everything on it, right down to the G.S. brakes is original.
