I am considering purchasing a Raleigh Techium bike from around 1988. I've read the posts about the weakness of an aluminum frame compared to steel. I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge about the strength of a technium aluminum frame in particular. From what Ive heard, the technium has alumium top and down tubes with steel making up the rest of the frame. The frame appears to be in good shape, no dings or exposed metal, but due to the age of the bike should I be concerned with its structural integrity?

If it was a garage ornament,no problem. On the other hand, despite all the BS about 'aluminum life',frames are designed for several lifetimes of use, whatever that is. They are worth very little.Get it cheap and if it goes TU you won't be sad.

You say they aren't worth much, is this because they aren't of good quality? I'd like to buy a cheap bike but not a bike that is cheap because of its low quality.

That's cool. Old school is fine by me. when your budget consists of a Benjamin or two, your options are limited. The model I'm about to buy is a Scott Tinley triathlon model, if anyone has any more info I'd appreciate it.
