Is there a way I can put some sort of ignition switch on my bike so that you need a key to use the motor? I don't want to accidently press the throttle and go straight into a car.

I just ordered a key switch and relay to do this

http://www.newark.com/c-k/101132c203nq/key-operated-switch/dp/81F1312?in_merch=Popular%20Key%20Operated%20Products&MER=PPSO_N_P_KeyOperated_None

The relay is 40 amps, but 12volts, so I will have to tap the 12 volts off one cells.

Do you know how I could wire the key switch and relay?K

I would assume that you already have some kind of an on/off on the controller. Or are you just wirered hot from the batteries to the controller? Whereas, you plug in and go? If that is the case you really need to correct that first and then worry about a key switch. Relisticly speaking if you turned on the controller switch and you should already be aware that the motor is live and not be suprised that it moves when turning the throttle even by accident. Consider the fact of driving a car. wonce you turn on the motor and put it in gear you better not be suprised if it moves whne you push the throttle. Like I said you need an on/off switch if you don't already have one. Even if you add 10 other switches and you accidentally hit the throttle the motor is still going to be activated. Right?

My amped rear geared kit doesn't have a on off switch. It only has a power plug which has a hell of an arc when connected. I'm also working on a pre charge circuit for the controller but I'm not sure it will work yet.

Another way could be to break into one of the throttle wires & insert the key-switch there---in this way you avoid the relay & the 12 V circuit---that is how I am switching my trike.

Good point. I was doing it this way to act like a kill switch also.

I wanted a key switch, that's the only reason I went with a relay.

If your system has a brake cutoff you could also connect the the brake wires in series. It the switch is off it would be the same as holding the brake on and the controller will not opperate.

This is my third season with my electric conversion. I had gotten the SLA batteries and the Chrystalite battery bag, with
the key switch. I find it really usefull. I had read that you should not move the motor backwards under power, so I just
switch off the power. If I have to leave my bike outside of a store, I lock it up and remove the key. I feel it adds some
security. I have put some saddlebags over the battery bag on the back rack, and it really kinda hides it if you just
take a quick look at it. It switches the full power with no relay, and like I said, my third season and no problems.

I got mine from itsElectric in Canada, but they have a US outlet as well.
