Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - What I Hate about Hipsters

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Don't get me wrong. I love fixies. They are absolutuely wonderful.

I ride fixed. But, the difference between me and the everyday hipster that you meet on the street that just got his very first bike yesterday, is that I have always loved bikes. Any kind of bike is nice to me.

Ive ridden bikes my whole life, from when I rode with the 10 other neighborhood kids on a rust bucket, to now when I commute all the way to school and back.

What I hate about them, is how they think they are so cool, they are so self righteous because they ride fixed-gear bicycles. The kind of people that make fun of people who ride singlespeed. The kind of people that make fun of you for riding fixed gear bikes without wearing a messenger bag.

I hate the kind of people that make fun of you because you can coast on your bike, or because you have a geared road bike. THey think that they are the hottest **** on the road because they have fixed gear bicycles, and they only just started liking bikes cuz fixed-gear was "in".

Now I understand my sig says "If its not fixed, its broken". Difference is, its all fun and games. Its a cute little saying I saw somewhere and liked.

But do you guys get what I mean?

My fixed gear bicycle has a flip flop hub which ive taken advantage of, and ive been called wussy, *****, and all sorts of other derogatory names because I decided to ride SS for a while.

Whats up with kids these days? Again dont get me wrong I still love fixed gear bicycles. But I hope you guys know what I mean when I say these things. Bikes are bikes, and you shouldn't hate when you only got a bike yesterday, and never rode a bike 5 miles round trip before in your whole damn life.

If someone wants geared bicycles, so be it. Power to them. If they want trikes, if they want recumbents, if they want TT bikes, or fixed gear, I aint hatin. If they want to ride FG or SS and not be a messenger, or not want to wear messenger bags, or "dress" the way FG riders are "supposed" to dress etc........

If I want to ride SS, then **** off.

What I hate about hipsters is that they caused inflation at Goodwill... used to be able to buy 3 shirts for a dollar. Now you can literally buy cheaper clothes at Wal-Mart because apparently dressing like a hobo with a meth problem is fashionable.

What point are you at in your life that you are being harassed by 94 pound vegans? I just don't get it are the yelling at you as you ride randomly? Which is really weird that anyone would care what the hell your doing with your bike. I think you just perceive people to feel this way, at least mostly. Or these your friends, if so you probably should find new ones if you hate hipsters.

Just a thought. I was aiming mroe at seeing if people have experienced the same? Not that this forum is a microcosm of the entire FG/SS culture, but I barely hear anyone talk about SS...mostly FG. There are no SS videos on youtube, people at school actually ridicule SS when I've spoken with them (they are FG riders......new hipsters.), etc.

But in any case, there are times you can just tell that someone just got their bike yesterday.

Haha by some of the pics I can't tell if people agree/disagree or love/hate the thread lol.

I did get over people. Just a thought.

The way you wrote the post says you want attention as much as the hipsters you so worryingly hate do.

Just do your thing and don't get all worked up about it!

rode through Boston yesterday and it was annoying to shift so often. I eventually got into a groove though but more than a few times I was riding in only 1 or 2 gears and doing lots of starting out of the saddle. this one asian young woman (her race is irrelevant) just thought I'd mention that plus she was a cute young pretty coed type, she had skin tight jeans on - they must have been stretch jeans huh? anyway she totally kicked my butt at one light - not to mention she almost got killed running the light!

Is it possible that you're being overly defensive? I've been on the receiving end of similar clique-ish behavior, especially when I started showing up to polo games and bringing the fail. Some people knew I was an enthusiastic cyclist and was branching out to new things- others probably still think I'm just a jackass newbie. I don't take the latter personally. I also know that the clique wasn't a bunch a guys that were cyclists first and friends second- they were friends that did things on bikes together.

Anyway, you mention a LOT of incidents and words, but nothing really specific. Are random people biking past you, noticing your chain is wrapped around a freewheel, and yelling 'wussy'? And are you honestly offended by 'wussy'?

Agreed. Most of these kids aren't over 140 pounds. Not the most intimidating people on earth. Next time they call you a wussy, go stick up for yourself. I assure you 99.99999999% of them will be quick to apologize.

To think that in 1986, I rode my Schwinn Traveler with just a front brake, and wore a little yellow cap. Now all these kids are copying my style.

Actually, I find it amusing at Interbike each year that the cookie cutter fixed gear riders try so hard to express their individuality by all having the same clothes, facial hair, and attitudes. But a handful that I talked to were actually reasonably cool.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of "interposition" and "nullification" -- one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight; "and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together."2

This is our hope, and this is the faith that I go back to the South with.

With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

And this will be the day -- this will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with new meaning:

My country 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing.

Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim's pride,

From every mountainside, let freedom ring!

And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.

And so let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire.

Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York.

Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania.

Let freedom ring from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado.

Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California.

But not only that:

Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia.

Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee.

Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi.

From every mountainside, let freedom ring.

And when this happens, when we allow freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual:

Free at last! Free at last!

Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!

Man..
It's really disappointing to see such rampant generalizations about people.

Can't we all just ride bikes? Whether it be for only a few months, or years, or your whole life we're all just rollin' and chillin.
People wouldn't ride if they didn't enjoy it, even if they started because it was the 'in' thing to do. They're still at it, right?
These guys you describe sound like noobs, but there's always noobs in everything and everybody hates 'em, but no one is a noob forever. They'll grow out of it, or grow out of the sport.
They just want to sound like they know what they're talking about and be accepted.
Chill man, you shouldn't let the actions of others upset you like that.
That's p***y s**t man.
