Fifty Plus (50+) - Bike Forums is Getting S L O W E R; Too Slow For Me

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Since the previous "upgrade" I've had troubles with this web site. It has been reported to Tom Stormcrowe who said he passed it on to whoever the techs are. After this last "upgrade" now there is a time problem that makes this web site a pain.
For those who understand IT you know that slow page loads are not only torture for the user they also cause timing problems in the system. Sometimes, the ads, at least some of which are PHP, cause errors because they are loading so slow.
So, I'm not leaving you good folks permanently. But, I am relegating this Board to days like today when it is snowing, or I've got lots of time, or I'm doing something else and just sort of keeping this open as a sideline. Or, I've been bad and feel like flaggelating myself.

Everything seems to be working OK to me.
That's a interesting observation about BF being s-l-o-w; I have a similar issue w/ one computer, but the others I use seem to be reasonably normal. If nothing else, you could try clearing your Internet cache and temp files and seeing if that helps.

I've found that the search function works differently.
I can't get the posts made when I search particular words with usernames that I remember being posted. At best, I might get the thread where those words were used, but I have to go through the whole thread to find the post I'm looking for. Some threads are very long, and I have to spend a lot of time searching through it, and sometimes, even then, the post I was looking for isn't even there.
I didn't have these problems before the upgrade. I used to just type in the words and username, I I almost always got a link to the match that led me directly to the post.

And here I thought I was the only one having problems. Although my computer has yet to shut down, it does time out with the "program not responding". Eventually, it does load. I'm using Explorer as my browser -- I know that Microsoft is the evil empire but it's certainly a common platform. Similarly, it's the only site with which I'm having problems. Sometimes those upgrades just aren't that ....

No malware. No problems with other sites. All computers are slow. Not going to install a niche browser just to do this site when no problems with any other. IE in its' varfiations is the overwhelming choice of web site publishers. That is what I run. Most of the sites I go to work on my BlackBerry. This is among the minority that does not.

I agree. Not going to do anything with my computer when it works very fast with all other forums and functions but the whole BF is sooooooo ssslllooowww since the upgrade I dont understand why an ugrade would cause some to have ths ssslllooooooow loading problem. Switch to Chrome. I have resurrected two computers by switching to Chrome. IE is a slow death sentence for a PC.

I'm running Firefox and sometimes Opera with bleeding edge Fedora 12 Linux as the OS.
All on an ancient P4 with 512 meg of ram and the pages just pop up when clicked, no slowness at all.
Talk about your "niche" setups.

Lat65, Firefox is hardly a niche browser. It was created by Mozilla. They have been around since before Mr. Gates even knew what the internet was.

IE8 is dog, period. I only use IE to run Outlook Web Access, which seems to require it, and I don't go beyond IE7. The IT folks at work have even refused to go to IE8, just as they refused to go to Vista.
For everything but Outlook Web Access, I use Safari. Firefox is great, but has issues with with a scrolling feature of the touchpad on my old IBM Thinkpad. Try either of the three (Safari, Firefox, or Chrome) and you will see just how much IE8 slows things down. Your experience may be okay using it on most sites, but try something else and you will see what you are missing.

hi ,
My first guess is your blocking pop-ups in your IE -8 set up if you add this address to your allowed pop-up sites under tools it will stop the hesitation , but you will see some pop-up adds..
win some loose some....
Thats how many browsers are infected by spy cookies, cause you allow a pop-up and that installs a little smarty cookie that monitors your activity and rats on you.
then you need to run a free spyware cleaner like addware se
I have been fight one on my local news channel dang little pop-up thats embedded in my operation INi file like tick....
Still get one now and then.

Yep I block pop-ups on all sites except the one I use for web mail. That one uses pop-ups for just about everything there and I've not found any left overs after leaving. But, I don't get the message asking if I want to allow pop-ups for this site like I do for others. So, I don't think that is the problem. I do notice they use a Lot of php script for ads. If not done right that can cause a timing problem and slow things down.
I agree on the need to scan frequently; using more than one product if possible since different malware is often able to evade one scanner algorithm but not another. The two I use most are ClamWin and Malware Bytes. Both are free and very effective. ClamWin's downside is that you have to know what you are doing because it shows false positives once in awhile. ESET and Microsoft both make very good products as well.

I am having the same problem loading BF using IE8. Once the initial page loads it seems to work fine, but the home page can take an eternity (30 seconds) to load.
I used Chrome before ie8 was released, but I find IE8 to be much more readable - the fonts just look a lot better. It's my 50+ year old eyes which have a problem with the Chrome browser!

As a Linux user I have to laugh at this. I ran chkrootkit a couple of months ago after having my webserver online for a couple of weeks. I might run it again before I change to Fedora 13.

Same problem here with IE8. The Home page seems to be the problem. I've had good luck getting on the forum by coming in the backdoor: http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/index.php/t-627514.html
Then clicking on the catagory I want. Then if I want I can click on "View Full Version" Cumbersome, but a lot faster than waiting for the main page to load.

As a person who has run unix and many of its' derivatives I know the reason it is fairly, not totally, malware free is that it just is such a minority operating system it doesn't attract the attention MS products do. Why go to the trouble of infecting something that is almost an incalculable minority system when you can go after the overwhelming majority systems. All you folks who champion your favorite minority application are in effect playing that old kids game King Of The Hill. But, the King is still there.
Based on what I see here I am fairly sure the problem is in the BF system.

That minority system is estimated to run between 60% and 70% of all servers on the World Wide Web. That's quite a minority. It is true that *nix desktop systems are only 2% to 3% of those in use but this is most likely the result of most people being nearly cumputer illiterate coupled with Microsoft's marketing expertise.
I have no problem with the way BF loads in fact I thinks its a better site since its upgrade. It works fine on my wi-fi laptop, my desk top, and my work computer. I run Google Chrome and Fire Fox and both browsers work fine, I can not say how good Explorer is because I never use it.

We've had intermittent issues with IE, as well as a couple of nonstandard browsers like Camino. This is because they use non W3C compliant native coding, and aren't quite as effective in rendering the CSS Graphic files as Firefox or Chrome or Safari. Also, older versions, like IE 6 have serious issues rendering the CSS Graphics, due to their obsolescence. A lot of these issues can be resolved by updating to the most current versions of IE, and clearing older cookies and relogging in to get new cookies. Camino has no support from vBulletin, though, so there's no advice I can offer there.

Not to mention, most people who are smart enough to run *nix on their systems are usually smart enough to limit administrator logins, keep backups and their systems up to date. Windows, tends to be run in administrator mode, backups tend to be lacklustre at best, and most systems are way behind on their security updates, so it's easy pickin's.

The context we are talking in here is the desktop world. Some would like to continue the Standards War of yesteryear as well as the definitions of who should have access to the computing world. But the fact is that by dint of its' success Microsoft has defined the standard. Today an application that does not comply with Microsoft standards and/or does not comply with the user interface standard defined by Microsoft and Apple is the one that is out of touch.
Yes, most people who use PCs are computer illiterate in the way I think you mean it. But, in that context, most people who drive cars are mechanically liliterate. Most people, who use microwaves are electonically illiterate. Most people who use the telephone or smartphone are radio theory illiterate. People commonly use devices they don't understand the innards of. That is a good thing both for the individual and society as a whole. So the fact that Microsoft and others have developed systems and marketed them to the masses to everyone's benefit is a very good thing, not a slam as you indicate.
Also, one of the dirty little secrets of the mainframe world is that they get infected too. They also fall to mistakes made by their accolytes as they tinker with the systems. They are also subject to corporate and military attacks. But, that is in a whole different world than we are talking about here.

The problem with Microsoft Standards is that they are a moving target, and are often very poorly documented, with large portions left as indeterminate. So even though V3.2 of a tool and V3.3 of a tool, both comply to the standard, they are still largely incompatible with each other, being neither forward or backward compatible. Of course when the developer uses V3.3 it means that you need to use the new version of the browser, which only works with the latest version of Windows, which means you need to replace your computer, because it's only powerful enough for the last version.
Standards from Standards bodies like W3C or ISO always require that standards are well and completely documented, and that enhancements have a backward compatibility to them. Removing a feature from the standard, requires that it be replaced by something else, and that no product has used the old feature for many generations. You can still write pages as they were written before Style Sheets, and most browsers will have no problem rendering them, because that methodology is still in the standard for HTML.

I just found that the search option defaults to the right tab and not the left tab. Drives me nuts when I want to search a certain forum. The left tab searches more like the previous version as I recall. But recollection is another problem that comes with 50+.
