Long Distance Competition/Ultracycling, Randonneuring and Endurance Cycling - California Triple Crown 2010?

I've loved that blue California Triple Crown jersey for years, and this may be my year!
Along with NorCal poster LanceOldstrong I've bagged the Solvang Double and plan to hit teh Hemet Double this weekend. The plan is to finish up with the Davis Double and have Powerhouse as a backup.

What's silly is that all this riding is totally motivated by jersey lust.

So, who else is looking for the CA triple Crown (http://www.caltriplecrown.com/), or something similar?

I really want that jersey as well! I tried two years ago and failed. I'm going for the King of the Mountains jersey right now. I hope to do the LA Wheelman Lowlands Double this summer. If I can make that happen I might try for two more in the fall, Hemet being one of them. I DNFed on Powerhouse two years ago - my only organized ride DNF. I went into it a bit under trained and riding alone for 11 hours took its toll. I think I mentally threw in the towel more than physically.

I've done Breathelss Agony once and Ride Around the Bear 4 times (must earn the jersey) but not into jersey lust so I don't waste my money. When I do the TC, I doubt I'll buy the jeresy either. If I need to prove that I've done a ride, I'll look it up online!:D

The best jerseys are the ones you have to earn. You see someone riding in a triple crown or a FC508 jersey you know they did something. Having said that I have 5-6 of those triple crown plaques laying around somewhere, probably with all the brevet medals I used to collect. ;) The funny thing is that when I started doing doubles I really coveted that blue/white jersey but after all these years and who-knows-how-many doubles I never bought one. Guess I'm cheap like Beanz.:p


SR stands for Super Randoneur. It's a designation given for doing a series of rides (it's a French thing ;)) of various distances, 200km, 300km, 400km and 600kms. They are a prerequisite for doing longer brevets(rides) in the 1000km-1400km+ range.

One thing that influence my decision is that I can NEVER get the correct size with t-shirts.:mad: I'll pay $15 for the tshirt and order a XXL but never get it. I ordered the darned thing and I can't get it? What's the sense in ordering for a shirt and pyaing for it then on ride day, they tell you there are no XXL'S!:mad: I guess those climbing rides are made for small guys and not us 220+ riders.

No way am I risking $80 for a jersey I can't wear. It might look nice next to my little t-shirts hanging in the closet!:p..but I've already given up on paying for stuff I can't use.

Check this out, The Bear, 2003 t-shirt like new condition sitting in closet. Why? Too small can't wear it.:mad:

I was too cheap to buy the SR jersey too. The designs they had last year didn't appeal that much, and I'm always afraid to buy a jersey without being able to try it on

Perhaps, but not really. Most all of the rides that are eligible for CA triple Crown credit allow a shorter time limit than ACP rules allow for a similar distance, yet the routes are as tough or tougher than your average brevet.

Anyhow, I'm in. Camino Real was #1, Grand Tour highland will be #2, and I'm planning for White Mountain to be #3.

Beanz, the Triple Crown jerseys are $59, you check their stock before you order and they send you the size you ordered, returns are easy. If they are out of stock they do make periodic re-orders. Their jerseys are Voler produces made in Grover Beach, next door to Pismo Beach. They run true to size and run through XXL. They are easy to find at bike shops and events to try on, they may even have a booth at the Tour of California.

But I bet the XXL won't fit me well. I'm 240'ish (6'1) with a long torso. I tried on Cannondale XXXL (that's 3) but it didn't fit me well. Maybe the long torso makes it short and it's tight in the shoulders.

Ya know, the Phillipino community puts on a century in Yorba Linda, proceeds go to Schools in the Phillipines. Not sure about the jersey this year, but last year, they had "BIG FEAST" at the end of the ride. The $70 entry fee included the feast and a jersey, pretty nice one too!:eek:..How did they do that?

Hope "Phillipino" didn't offend anyone. I can say "dice are black and white" and someone will come down on me.:D

I am trying for the Triple Crown again this year. Didn't start well with a DNF at Camino Real due to a pinched nerve in my back (crashed out).

Still had a bad back pain so worked Spring Solvang and Mulholland instead of riding. Tried Hemet Double, finished in 16 hours with the help of Motrin to subdue the back pain.

After Hemet I went to a chiropractor (sp?), Saralie Liner (who is an excellent long distance cyclist herself) and she totally repaired my back. No more pain; it's great!

The current plan is to ride the Davis Double and the Grand Tour (Beanz, join me on this one!) for the TC, then add Eastern Sierra and Knoxville for the Thousand Mile Club (TMC?) for 2010.

If I get all those done, my total will be 48, so just two short of the Hall of Fame. That's my goal for 2011!

True Beanz, 2010 has been bad for me too (cycling wise), but in 2011 you can lose some weight, be the "leaner, meaner, Beaner" and fit into a "Large" with no need for the "Extra" part.

I wear the Med. CA Triple Crown jersey in the heat of the summer, but have a "Large" for winter use when I'm wearing a wool base layer.

I remember back in the 70s hearing about the Davis Double and thinking "How is that even possible?" Now I've done it three times, and tossed in a couple of others as well. I know many go faster and farther, but for a non-athletic guy, this is pretty hot stuff.

My season worked out pretty well, esp. considering how poorly it started!

Ended with seven doubles: Hemet, Davis, Eastern Sierra, Grand Tour, White Mountain, Knoxville and Bass Lake.

Plus, since I worked Spring Solvang and Mulholland I got the Gold Thousand Mile Club jersey. Well, actually, I already have two (wore the full-zip one on Bass Lake).

So now I have CA 49 doubles and planning on Camino Real for number 50. After than I plan on taking a break from doubles . . . but you know how tough addictions are to break. So no promises.

My season has been going good so far. I've completed seven doubles to date: Camino Real, Solvang Spring, Hemet, Central Coast, Davis, Grand Tour and Bass Lake.

I have 2 doubles left for the season: Solvang Fall and Death Valley Fall. October is going to be a busy month for me with 3 doubles in 4 weekends.

I have 40 doubles now and hope to have 42 at the end of the year. Next year I only have to do 8 doubles to get into the Hall of Fame.

It does, or it will . . . but even after I complete Camino Real I have to wait until the awards breakfast (the Sunday morning after the Knoxville Double) to actually get the Hall of Fame induction.

I don't remember if you were at the breakfast or not since Roland had me manning the video camera for him, i.e. I had very little time to look around.

I wanted my first TC and SR this year also but lost out on the early year build up rides due to injury. Just completed the Autumn Solvang DC (my second DC this year, plus the Heartbreak Hundred) and 300k and 400k brevets so I will be prepped for next year. I will shoot for 200-300k brevets early and then get going with the Camino Real DC. See you there.

@leaping_gnome 2011 should be a great year for ultra's with everyone qualifying on PBP. Hopefully next season is injury free and full of success for you.

Nice work Dante. I feel like I need to play catch up now. I lost out on the TC this year due to illness and injury at the height of all the spring events I had planned. I'm planning to try again next year, but some of the TC doubles also fall on the same days as some of the brevets. Completing my first SR is next years priority. I was planning to do Camino Real on my SS, but I have a 300k that same day.

Got a small box from UPS today. I had no idea what I could have ordered from AFM Engineering in Santa Ana. Some kind of promotional material, may be!

Oh! surprise when I opened the box. My last double was 6 months ago, sounds like an eternity. But here it is. Should I wear it tomorrow or put it under the tree and wait a few more days?
