Well, Dave was dragged kicking and screaming from his 19th century pedal system to 21st Cenury peddle system this morning-- during my ride yesterday my old Nike cleats completely delaminated from the sole-- it was only through righteously (and painfully) cranking down on the toestraps that I was able to get the last 15 miles in back to my car.

This morning I went to a Performance near my home (Fairfax, VA) and got a set of Look pedals and a pair of Lake roadshoes.

Sweet Jesus, what a difference! No foot pain for 30 miles.

Dave :D

BTW, the first clipless pedals were invented over 100 years ago too...

April 1895: Charles Hanson of Peace Dale, Rhode Island invents first clipless pedal. (Twist to lock and unlock. Has rotational float.)

July 1895: Elijah Harris invents first suction cup clipless pedal (suction cups on pedal adhere to shoe).

October 1895: Canadian Marmaduke Matthews invents first recessed-cleat, dual-sided, spring-actuated clipless pedal.

1897: Donald Macintyre patents a new type of recessed-cleat clipless pedal.

1897: Tudor invents first magnetic clipless pedal.

Didn't you ever talk to your friends who were making fun of you for riding clips/straps? Was it a case of listening but not hearing? An extreme retro-grouch attack? Just curious...

Think about how much more enjoyment you're going to get out of riding the same distance. Amazing. Have a great ride!

You will love the clipless pedals. I still have toe clips on my old mountain bike but it is very convenient if I want to go for a ride with regular shoes.

I rarely ride in groups, but when I do I wear my vintage components like a badge of pride :p

In truth I hadn't ridden in years, but seeing Floyd Landis on Stage 17 just flipped a switch in me to get back into road training and racing. Since that day I've ridden 6 days a week, first just 30 minutes a day on my mountain bike (the fatboy bike as I call it), and now I'm up to 90 minutes a day at a much faster pace on my old Cannondale R series. Lost 25 pounds so far. I probably have another 25 to go before I will feel good about kitting up and going for a ride in my old race jerseys.

When that happens I'm going to buy an entire new setup, I'm still contemplating what, but I do want to go strictly Campy Record all around.
