I started shaving about a week ago with no issues. Took a ride the first day.. nothing weird. The second day, I stopped to pee in a cornfield, then continued on my ride for teh rest of the way. WHen I got in the car to go home, I noticed that my legs were burning and itching like crazy. Looking at my legs, I noticed that they were covered in small red bumps on the front from my quad down to just above the ankle. I figured that I just got into something whilst urinating in the cornfield. So... I'e been on a few rides since, and each time when I'm done these bumps (which are still there) burn like crazy. I'm thinking it's just the hair follicles getting irritated from the sweat coming out. I also noticed today that I had new bumps, and no, I didn't stop in any cornfields today. So what gives? Anyone else have this problem? It's definitely not poison ivy, and the fact that I had new ones forming today makes me think that it isn't any sort of thing I got into. Any ideas?

It took my legs a couple of weeks to finally get used to shaving. It'll go away with time. A good lotion immediately after shaving is critical.

Do you soak your legs in warm water before shaving, then use warm water to shave your legs? Then afterwards, do you use a lotion (like an aloe lotion or some soothing lotion) to help prevent irritation? And do you continue to use lotion to prevent your legs from drying out?

No?

Try it next time and it will probably make all the difference!

If the bumps don't appear to coincide with hair folicles, check that you didn't walk into some chiggers when you strayed off the path.

We use shaving lotion for our face so we should use shaving lotion for our legs. They are both skin. If you do this it should be like when you shave your facial hair.

It's bacterial

rubbing alcohol will kill it, as will swimming in a pool. Go lay out in the sun, or tanning bed, It will get rid of it quickly

This may be a stretch, but...

I wonder if your alergic to the corn? I used to work at the Green Giant plant in Montgomery, MN. during the pea pack I was fine. When we switched over to the corn pack, I got a terrible rash like you discribe on your legs. Mine was on my arms. It was referred to as "corn rash." It this is what you have, a hot shower and it should clear up on its own.

you have what i have coined "Death Bumps"

They first started to happen to me on my leg right above my knees. It only happens in warm to hot weather where im sweating a bit. Your probably getting some sort of heat rash...

I would get them, they would burn and itch for a day or so and then just stay discolored for a few more days then go away. I termed them "Death Bumps" the first day i noticed them cause they burned like a SOB!

anway... just my 2cents worth :)

It could also happen if you have especially curly hair. When the hair is cut off at the poor(skin surface) it could grow back under the skin causing a bump.

That's exactly what they were. They're pretty much gone now.

Oh, ye old "heat rash". I get them too in really hot extremes, and when you touch the bumps, it almost feels like there's warmth emitting from the bumps. Better to keep them cool and dry and not try to rub against anything with them (like clothing and stuff). They do go down and disappear in time, but until then, they sure do burn and itch at the same time.

I tried shaving once, but I got ingrown hairs. Will that go away after shaving for a while? I just gave up after a couple weeks. I think I have to shave every day or every other day, or my legs get pokey.

Yeah, I've been shaving for close to two weeks now, and I shave pretty much every day, or at least five times per week. I can't stand the stubble when the hair starts growing out a little bit.
By the way, Koffee, I took your advice and started using Aloe lotion after each shave. It feels wonderful! Thanks!

Dood, that's one of the best things you can do after your shave!

Seriously, you should shave the legs while in the shower. Soften up those hair follicles with warm to hot water, then soap up good and shave. Afterwards, a good soothing lotion like the aloe will do wonders for you, and you also should just think about using lotion everyday and often. Don't allow your legs to dry out.

Aloe cream works well, but for better results try rubbing on a mild topical steroid cream post shave. The safest and best is 0.5-1.0% hydrocortisone available at any grocery store. Mild topical steroids help quelch that inflammatory reaction on your skin without the systemic effects that people worry about.

Chiggers.

I always liked the name of that insect.

Use aloe shave cream. Makes your legs smooth as a baby's butt. And that's what everyone wants!
