I need to buy a new ax since mine took a walk from my shed. I am open to suggestions on which ax to purchase. I will be at Sears this afternoon. I was considering the Fiskars ax. These looked to be fo decent quality.
Can you help me pick an ax?
the gibson les paul is always a solid choice. Paul Reed Smith's are my personal choice.

I bought an axe at home depot that had a fiberglass handle, worked with it for 7 years as a firefighter and it never let me down. Can't remember the name though. =0(

I would get a legless one this time. My current axe is about 40cc's and has McCulloch on the "blade"

That's the last thing we need to do. Get Lady Siu interested in getting an axe. You know the history she has with knives imagine if you can what she would do to herself with an axe. :D

I'm really shocked that Siu was the first one to chime with a link to a blade of some sorts.
I will second the HD axe idea. I think I have this one. (http://www.homedepot.com/Outdoors-Garden-Center-Garden-Tools-Axes-Mauls-Picks-Sledges/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xggZarqj/R-100544712/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053) Use it primarily in landscaping, chopping out roots etc, It has not let me down but I do not use it that much either.

I am really surprised to see you using the word shocked and not having a link to a taser or urbandictionary.

Hey that Benchmade is full tang!! G10 scales for superior grip, even with sweat. And that sucker is SHARP! Just resting it on something will leave a mark. It feels good in the hands and when you swing it, it doesn't feel easy to lose. Although it's listed for $325 I can probably get it for about $280.

Although it excites me, I can't trust myself with an axe. No no no. :twitchy:

What do you need the axe for?
If you're felling trees, follow jsharr's advice and get a chainsaw. If you're splitting rounds, get a maul and/or some wedges (or a power splitter). If you're splitting seasoned wood like kindling, I like the Roughneck Kindling Splitter.

The only reason I'd see for a traditional axe is for camping in areas where a chainsaw is impractical or illegal and you'd just want to cut up some slash for a campfire.

If it's for splitting fire wood you can't beat a spring loaded ax. I like it because the head is heavy for good power and it does not get stuck. The spring tabs make the wood split easier or just fly apart. My neighbor gave it to me a few years back since he is older and can't use it any more. Besides cycling splitting wood is great stress reliever.

I have a nice bow saw, chain saw, and maul. I like to work with an ax. When the stumps in my yard are low enough I think I can cut them very flush with an adz. I have my firewood pile split and just need to split some kindle from time to time.
I picked up the Fiskars ax at Sears. It looked more well constructed than the Craftsman ax. The Craftsman was very similar to the Stanley pictured here earlier.

Get a cheap chain saw at Home Dopey before you put that thing in your skull.

As Max Brooks so aptly pointed out, chainsaws are fun, but eventually they run out of gas.
As for an axe, don't let someone else choose something so personal for you. Give them a heft and make sure the hand movement in your swing feels natural. Maybe a few test swings over in the lumber section or on slow-moving, moaning co-customers (even though they're not really zombies - they just look and act like it - a corollary to Zombieland Rule #1 states they will be the first to become so. Might as well get a head start on the apocalypse). Just get an axe that feels right.
If you're just splitting firewood, get a maul, not an axe. In other cases I prefer the mobility benefit of an axe, but firewood is best dealt with by a maul.

Hey Siu, is that yours? Heres are a few pics of the one I used on the job. (yellow and blue) I just dug it out of the basement. The other one is one I like as it is super duper light and very easy to use in a fight...if such a thing is ever needed. Both have no names so I'll go ahead and lable them "No name axes."

Don't forget murder. Sometimes a chainsaw and a mask made of human flesh just isn't practical.
Thankfully I have friends like you and jsharr to remind me.
Hmmm...when was it that jsharr said he was going to visit me...and where'd I put that bench grinder?

A "real man" would go into the woods and find a hickory branch, get some trumpet or honey suckle vines, and a good piece of flint from the river bed. A little chipping, a little lashing, maybe add some sinew from a corpse or two and you would have a perfectly functional axe.
I thought this was gonna be about a guitar

ILB, those are cool! I like the second one...
No, that isn't mine. It's the one I would get but I really have no use for it. The knife I pre ordered came in yesterday but I just bought that bike. I didn't think it was going to come in so soon because they had to redesign it and.......well, it's here and I have a bike. So the sits at the shop. Waiting.

I like the first one as it saved more than a few lives, but I do like the second one! I plan on buying another one just like it very soon, nothing like a sweet strong light axe in each hand when the going get rough! ;0)

I've never seen or heard of such a thing, but now I want one. How does it work?
My father had one like this years ago. So I can say: poorly. Dry seasoned wood should split easily with a regular maul.
And we all thought Siu had had stepped away from knives... oh no... girl actually UPGRADED to axes.
Siu, is that benchmade certified for Zombie Defense? Cuz any good ax should be certified for Zombie Defense.

When the blade bites the top of the log and the tabs kick out causing the wood to split out more. Then the retract via the springs. Works great with dry wood but then doing any splitting by hand it's got to be dry. I've been splitting wood since I was a boy on the farm and this by far has been the best, even better that a maul. But good luck trying to find one. I've done a few internet searches and have not had much luck.

its not the weapon that has to be certified for zombie defense, its the person yeilding the weapon that has to be certified for zombie defense.
