Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Pizza Racks

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Another silly question, because why the hell not?
Has anyone picked up a pizza from a local shop and attempted to bring it home on their fixed gear?
I just held the box horizontal and rode home with no handlebars.
But, there has to be a better way. Any recommendations for a rack that can accommodate a horizontal large pizza box?

I know i've seen pictures of all kinds of people's bikes with custom built pizza and beer racks. I don't know if any are commercially available or people just have friends with welders. I like the idea though, and have been thinking about something similar for my ride, so I'd be curious to know how these various racks came about.

Google CETMA racks or search Velo-orange's site.

Wow, CETMA Racks is now CETMA Cargo, but their 5-rail rack can definitely hold a pizza box. Make that 16:

Still, I was hoping to hear some DIY stories. $120 is a bit much just to tote a pizza.
I'm sure DIY is easy if you have access to a TIG welder.
My roommate own every welder under the sun, yesssssss. Looks like I may have found my next project for the 26" single speed.

Digging around for pizza rack ideas and came across someone using a Shimano shoe heat moulder being used as a pizza oven... -_-

That's awesome! I made a welder out of an old microwave with some MIT students during a miters meet. Maybe I should use it to build a pizza rack for my bike.
Any thoughts on whether front or rear rack is better for pizza?

I just put the box on my bullhorns and rest my hand on top so it does not slide off.
Sometimes I hook a thumb over the side of the horn where there is a gap between the bars and the box.
I thought that was what bullhorns were for...now I am wondering if I missed something......
Enjoy

Hah, yeah, Bullhorns are totally the vertical brake cables of our day.
There's an old joke that the French used drop bar brakes with the brake cable extending out vertically much longer than the rest of the bike industry, which moved to having the brake cables extend out horizontal towards the center. This is said to be the case because the French would prop their daily baguette on the brake cables and ride home that way.

but when you consider the fact that most shops charge about $2 just for delivery, it'll pay for itself over the next 60 pizzas...

Plus tip... so even less pizzas ;)
You have a point... although I never have them deliver as I prefer to bike over, and if I can find a fun DIY project, than all the better.
Still, the CETMA Cargo 5-Rail is totally awesome.
As it's just a pizza, it would be nice to set up a clip-on system, though. This way I can put it on and take it off just for those late night pizza runs.

you could get one of those seatpost mounted racks and just use bungee cords

Why carry all those boxes if you cant even see anything ahead of you.
My Wald 157 carries pizza nicely. It's the exact same size at the bottom as my favorite pizza joint's size large box.
Cheap, too.

Does it actually fit inside the basket, or on top of the basket railing?
Right there at the bottom! I've strapped things to the top o fit as well though, that could work for really big pizzas or when you need to get beer at the same time:

Why not just use a normal rack? If I can strap a meter-long archery case to mine, than you can bungee a pizza to one without much ingenuity.

I'm currently in the process of building my own outdoor wood-fired brick pizza oven so I don't have to use a special rack.

They make a luggage rack for vespas that you could probably also find a way to rig up for this.

Still not sure. I like some of the suggestions for market items like the Wald and the CETMA, but I'm more tempted to build my own contraption.
I'm participating in a welding class at Bike! Bike! Northeast this weekend, and I might discuss this with a few others there.

just saw this today...sort of unrelated because it is smaller than a pizza box (just get 3 small pizzas? lol)
but it seems like you could use any ol' rack and 2 bungee cords and secure a pizza long enough for a neighborhood ride....
or in a more DIY fashion....
what if you just made some sort of flat board, pizza box sized (perhaps with ridges to keep the box in), that attaches to the flat of any sort of front or back rack?
also, i found this:

CETMA Style Bolt Together Front Bike Rack
http://www.instructables.com/id/CETMA-Style-Bolt-Together-Front-Bike-Rack/
didn't really peruse it much, but seems like a bike rack you can make yourself that dosn't require welding. bet you could fudge dimensions to make it more pizza box friendly....

It's fun to talk about crap.
The more we over-think this pizza rack, the better. I want the best damn cheap rack for carrying a pizza, and you can't stop me!
Btw, should design some suspension for the rack, because no one wants an over-jostled pizza.

Hey antiaverage
The last time I was on Newbury St. I walked by the Upper Crust which is an expensive pizza joint. They had a bike in the window and if I remember correctly they had a pizza rack on it. You should check it out next time you are in that part of the city.

Haven't done it, but I've considered it lately.
Extra cash, no matter how little the amount may end up being is always good than none at all. And on top of that I get to ride all over the place and whip my ass back into shape. Why not?
The "why not?" is not rhetorical. Seriously, if someone thinks it's a horrible idea, shout it out.

I'm actually leaving my cushy desk job because I hate being stuck in an office sitting all day and moving to another big city where I just want to ride my bike as much as possible. I was wondering what the food delivery business is like from people who do it here.

Cool. I know the feeling. I'm also looking for a more active/outdoorsy job to support myself over the summer while I also do some freelancing. Tired of sitting inside in front of a computer screen almost 24/7 (pretty sure it's one of the things that has had a hand in me growing so out of shape). Want to break it up a little bit.
I'm definitely interested in hearing/reading accounts on delivery and other related jobs from people here.
