Road Cycling - Ultegra 10sp...when is it coming?

Ultegra has been completely renewed. Shimano®'s total redesign was developed to appeal to the widest range of cyclists. The shift/brake lever is the same style as the ST-7800 (2004 Dura Ace) which achieves a smooth operation and a design that is more comfortable and easier to reach. At the same time the high precision front and rear derailleurs offer a quick and accurate response. The new Ultegra 6600 series utilizes Shimano®'s Hollow tech II crank technology (again like the new Dura Ace) that not only reduces weight but increases rigidity and efficiency. Ultegra is also equipped with high end functions, including brake shoe toe-in adjustment and Flight Deck® technology. A new light weight and easy set up seat post is also available. To complete the line-up a matching Ultegra branded pedal will be introduced. The new Ultegra will be available in a 20 speed and a triple chain ring 30 speed version. Finally new Ultegra will be approximately 100 grams lighter than the previous model and should be available on bikes and on it's own in December, 2004.

There's a dilemma for those of us building a bike. Do we wait for the new 10 sp. Ultegra, go with the old 9 sp. or switch to something else like DA or Campy Chorus?

I can't imagine the new 10 speed will be anywhere close to the same price as the current 6500.

by the time your bike gets painted and ready to rumble, i think the 10 speeds'll be out :)

besides, you're not going to want to ride the new lemond in the slop anyway, so you can wait a month or two. use it to save your pennies - 10 sp will be worth it. if nothing else, it's something new that will make that bike totally different than your others.

You will see these on bikes at the end of this year. You may be able to buy it as a group before that. But we are not expecting to see Ultegra 10's until around Christmas and maybe later than that.
It's like the entire bike industry had brain fade.
We are ordering our Six13's with Centaur on them becasue we can get them now. And we are developing a lot of new Campy fans as a result.

my LBS guy was genuinely excited about the ultegra group that they had. the guy said that he had the whole group in the back of the shop, but they weren't allowed to build anything with it yet.

your lbs guy is either bs-ing you, or he ripped off a shipment to trek. not even specialized has received the 10-speed ultegra. from what i understand it will be available for production next month, in samples in october and for sale in december.

well, its a trek dealer...I suppose its possible.

They are already on the 05 bikes,check out the 5.2SL Trek.

We sell $4 million in bikes a year.

Our purchasing manager just got back from Waterloo.

There are no Treks with Ultegra 10's that you can see, touch, smell or taste.

I ordered two weeks ago a SL 5.2 with the new Ultegra of course. At first they told me it would arrive on Oct but now they're telling me Shimano hasn't shipped enough ultegra units, so I've been delayed until December. Anyone else buying this bike with news??? Thanks,

Shimano's 10-Speed Ultegra Officially Due In December JULY 28, 2004 -- NUNSPEET, Netherlands (BRAIN)--One of the industry's worst-kept secrets is now officially fact: Shimano is coming out with a 10-speed Ultegra group. The new Ultegra, featuring Hollowtech II technology borrowed from Dura-Ace, will be available in the market in December, said Harald Troost, press relations officer for Shimano Europe."After the conspicuous revamp of the Shimano Dura-Ace components last year, it's Ultegra's turn now to get an extreme make-over. Ultegra has been remodeled into a completely new, high-end, road racing group set. It's stiffer, more ergonomic and faster for even more pleasure on the road. And despite adding a tenth cog to the cassette, the new group is lighter than the previous nine-speed model," Troost said.The Ultegra crankset will be available in both double (52-39 and 53-39) and triple (52-39-30) versions. Cassettes come in 11-23, 12-23, 12-25 and 12-27 combinations and are compatible with both 9- and 10-speed Shimano freehubs and wheels. Shimano is also offering four junior cassettes in 13-25, 14-25, 15-25 and 16-27, Troost said.Shimano redesigned its Dual Control levers into a more ergonomic shape and gave them arced travel for faster shifting. The dual pivot brakes incorporate an easy toe-in adjustment, and the company outfitted them with new pads that offer improved stopping power and 100 percent greater durability, Troost said. I just checked JensonUSA. The new 6600 Ultegra shifters are listing for $365! Yikes!!!
This is over $100 more than they're selling the OLD DuraAce shifters for, and $60 less than the NEW Dura Ace. What gives? Seems like if you're willing to spend in that price range anyway, than there's little reason not to go for the DA??

Best think about ultegra 10 for me is cheaper cassettes....only $72 and a new 6600 front derailleur.

I'm curious to see how much merchants will sell new ultegra 10 shifters for on Ebay.....usually it is about the same price as performance after the 20% discount coupon.

lbs in santa cruz has a kestrel bike with ultegra 10 on it already in stock.

Chain Reaction in Redwood City has a 10sp Ultegra tripple on display.

Wonderful :rolleyes: ....I buy the DA 7800 shifters cuz I wanted the strongest design out there (the extra 10th gear doesn't do too much really....9 speed was plenty). Now I find out the ultegra 6600's are better.

I wouldn't bet on it........'some guy, who know's some guy, whose brother once slept with a shiela who used to know someone who works at Shimano', type info doesn't exactly instill me with confidence.

mark it down. you will not be able to get ultegra 2005 till mid-year 2005. shimano will ship first to the manufacturers who will use it to build with the new bikes.
if you want ultegra 2005 alone to upgrade or build up an existing frameset i'm betting may2005 till it is available alone.

anyone convinced that the new 2005 line in either ultegra or DA will be that much better? if i am running a 11-21 or 12-23, is there much difference in getting the extra gear and saving 1/2 pound?

On my new bike, shown above, I spec'd the 2005 Ultegra 10 speed for the build. Picked up the bike on Tuesday...November 16, 2004. And, had I not gone with this bike, the other bikes that were finalists in my search could also have been built up with the 2005 Ultegra for delivery before the end of this year.

I can't speak to the parts' availability alone. For that, it may be true that it won't be available till May. But it is available for builds.

I agree with riphraph. I ordered a 105 group earlier this year and it took two months for that. Seems there's metal shortage in Asia these days.

My LBS already has some Ultegra-10 bikes...
