What is grown in a lawn in rural Georgia that you need a heavy duty mower?

Have a John Deere L110 and love it. Absolutely zero problems after 5 years.

I've got an older Poulan with a B&S 14 HP motor and 38" deck. I bought it off a guy used for about $350. A new throttle cable and some fluid in the transmission and it works better than new. I also riveted the discharge closed and put mulching blades on it. As-is, it'll cut about a foot of grass (calf high) down to 2" without slowing. I'd buy another one.

My only problem (and I'm thinking it's due to a too-small battery) is that it doesn't like to start when hot.

Then again, I really like briggs motors anyway. I've never had one die on me - including the one that my grandfather bought new in 1958 that's never been rebuilt. mmm...

It doesn't have one. I've gone through the wiring system (mice ate it last winter) as well as the fuel system (dry rotted) and there's nothing beyond a weak battery that would cause it to do this. Actually, happened to me with my Oldsmobile as well. With that, I threw in a battery with an extra 50 CCA, and it cranked right over.

Look in the paper for a used SCAG 3 wheel...best mowers ever and landscapers are going under all the time, you could probably pick one up used in great shape for a decent price....

JD X series with a Kawasaki engine - will last you a loooong time! I've got a 1986 JD 165 that just keeps on ticking and still cuts great. 12hp Kawi is unstoppable.
