I am trying to build up a fixed gear for my lady, she's been riding a single speed for awhile already and she's ready to go fixed. But I am a under a certain budget and I don't want to go over too much...she's currently running 27" and I was wondering if I should get a new 700c set or if I should get a set of hubs and lace it to the 27". She still rides brakes and such, then I will need to get new brake set if I were to go 700c. Although some of the parts I already have but I'm still wondering if it's a good idea to go 700c.

The main advantage of going from 27" to 700c is that you will have a much larger selection of rims and tires. As long as you have at least 4mm of downward brake block adjustment on your calipers, then you won't need new ones.

Add up the cost

If you go with 700c:
Wheelset-$150+
Front Brake Caliper(longreach)- $15+
Total Cost- at least $150-might be more like $200

If you go with the 27:
Flipflop rear Hub-$40
Spokes-$30
Cog and lockring-$20
Tension and truing after you build the wheel- $20

Total $110

So there you go

Yea that's one of the main reasons I want to go with 700c with more tire choices and I think that's I will do. Just found a new rear wheel for $82 only at my LBS!
Alex DA 22 laced onto a Formula hub. I feel like I've got a good deal. Just going to use some of my old stuff for her front wheel. :)

Haha I crunched up the numbers too, I almost went with the 27" option but I found a reasonable priced rear wheel.
