Last night after my figure skating lesson, I was skating around and turned backward. I wasn't jumping or spinning or anything, just simply turning backward. The back of my blade got caught in a rut and suddenly I was horizontal in the air trying to figure out the best way to break the fall. I knew it was going to hurt. I couldn't see the ground so I couldn't tell when I was going to land. I ended up falling on my eldow and my lower back. I rolled over and laid there for a minute. I had my coach and a few other people standing over me in a circle asking if I was ok. I told everyone I was just going to lay there for a while and everyone looked so concerned I had no choice to get up for fear someone would call an ambulance. I got up and got ioff the ice for a few minutes then went back out to skate it off. Getting back on the ice and not concentrating helped a lot. It quit hurting. But today...my lumbar area hurts and though I can't see a bruise, I'm sure I bruised my elbow pretty good because it hurts when I lean on the chair arm. Looks like I need some ice for it now.

Tiff :)

Ouchie. In Martial Arts they always tell us that when we fall to tuck our elbows in, our hands into a fist and our chin down and roll it out. I know that natural instinct tells us to put our hands out but that's how bones are broken.

Hope you are feeling better and that you dont have any back injury to be concerned about.

Take care.

I don't think I have anything to be worried about...just some bruised muscles that will heal themselves.

This thread leads me to ask a question I've always been curious about...well...not always...but anyway.

The most common injury in the pro peleton is the broken collarbone, right? Maybe not the MOST common but it sure seems to happen a lot when there's a fall.

My question is whether the break occurs as the result of the ride putting their hand out to break their fall or is it the result of actually landing on their shoulder?

As Sui mentioned, it goes against instinct to keep your hands/elbows in but you'd think it might be helpful to teach some of these techniques to riders. Or you could use the Jens Voigt approach and try to break your fall with your face. :twitchy:

Ouch indeed! I hope you feel better soon. Take a warm bath with epsom salts, that might help.

ibuprofen or Naproxen would be good if its just muscle soreness.....here's hoping its very short lived.
btw, which rink were you at? The one near Gwinnett Place Mall?

I presume the latter. Putting out a hand to break a fall from a bike is rarely a good idea.

Yep, that's my rink. Were you there to see me fall? Next week is my last lesson for a while. I have to wait until my kitchen renovation is paid for. :(

"Tuck and roll" was what I was thinking when I crashed (both times), I even heard my sensei's voice then.

I would recommend breaking your fall with your figure skating partner.

This.

If you land on an outstretched arm at those speeds, you would likely break your proximal humerus (fx/dislocation of the shoulder), Proximal radius (elbow), or wrist. Or more likely, a combination of the 3.

Ouch that hurts! Nothing worst then a feet from under ya fall on ice.

I'd lawyer up for the poor ice maintenance that left the ruts in the ice:D
