General Cycling Discussion - pink bikes??!!??

I just bought the Bicycling Buyers Guide today. Did anyone else notice how many "women only" bikes were PINK? Come on now... The last time I wanted something in pink was when I was about 5 years old. Most women I know who are "serious" riders wouldn't be caught dead on a pink bike. Am I off base with this?

I had a pink Fat Chance mtb once...

When I was in high school I had a Pink Haro Master. Man I would love to find one of those and restore it. I dont see anything wrong with pink pikes for men or women.

I don't like pink. My dad, on the other hand, loves it. So, how come you don't see many pink bikes for men? And who started this whole 'pink is for girls, blue is for boys' thing anyway?

IT'S ABOSOLUTELY THE UGLIEST PUTRID PINK I'VE EVER SEEN!!!! The Model Road bike you're refering to is the R800 (page 48) --- costing a whopping $1649 -- adding insult to injury!!!! For the most part I can't figure out for the life of me what the manufacturer was thinking when he chose the COLOR!!! I've never seen anything so BLANTNTLY SEXIST AND STEROTYPICAL -- in recent years!!! I personally find it OFFENSIVE!! I recently purchased a C'dale R2000 -- Ferrari Red-- Yellow Decals -- Team Saecco Replica-- I've yet to ride it due to work (tommorow starts my vacation til 4/1/02) -- I was really incensed to say the least!!! I fired off a letter to the executives at Cannondale regarding this matter. I emphasized the fact that the buyer you're trying to attract: A- No longer is 5 years of age! B- Doesn't play with Barbie Dolls! C- Does not desire to be the laughing stock of the cycling team! D- Isn't in need of ALL EYES ON ME ATTENTION WHILE I RIDE! --- Last BUT -- Not Least --- Don't Need A Pretty Pink Bike To Match My Barbie Doll OUTFITS!!!! E- We are now in the 21st. Century -- there is no such thing as Women Specific Design ___ It's a CROCK!!! When I read the buyers guide and got to the full suspension MTB's they(C'dale) DID IT AGAIN!!!! THIS TIME FOR EVEN MORE CASH ---- A PIRATES RANSOM OF $2099 ----- THE NERVE!!! When I was a kid all you had were the department store bikes -- i.e. Sears -- J.C. Penney -- Strauss Stores -- not much to choose from. If you were lucky and rich -- you got a Schwinn!! Which by the way has filed for bankruptcy since last October/November. Then in my teen years Raleighs, Puegeots, Schwinns, Bianchis', etc., were becoming more visible. A womans choice was limited to either a Mens' frame (traditional diamond or a Ladies Frame ( Step Through -- Sloping Top Tube-- Mixte Frame). At this point in time --late 60's early 70's --I was an avid Tom Boy ( I dislike labels -- just to give you an idea of the times) There Were NO FEMALE RACERS OR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT THEREOF!!! Then came the 80's Womens Rights in full swing (or so they'd like you to think) more women entering the non=traditional work force ( Police - Fire - Corrections___like myself) and the traditional male/female stereotypyes were slowly disappearing. Fast foward to 2001 --- What happened? Why a company so large as C'dale with their whole line of clothing, accessories and variety of bicycles --- have they reverted to the DARK AGES???? I suggested E-Mailing them on behalf of this outlandish attrocity -- designed with the female rider in mind!!!!!

To be honest, I hate pink houses, pink cars, pink kitchens, Pepto Bismol....but I love pink flowers!

I was in Italy last week and saw a male cyclist wearing hot pink, yellow, and black spandex - mostly hot pink.

I wasn't sure if he was wearing old stuff from the '80's or new stuff from today. Of course, it isn't like the Italians to dare to be out-of-fashion, so it had to be new.

Hot pink may be back. BEWARE, however. It is as likely to go out of fashion as fast today as it did in the 1980's - wasn't it like a 23.5 day long fashion trend or something like that?

I'm still having trouble with my red, white, and blue Trek. I'm far too Canadian to be worthy of such colors. I'll be painting as soon as I can afford to but I don't think I'll be painting it pink.
BTW Thanks KevinG for that PinkBike.com link. It's sweet and very local looking. I was searching for the last half hour or so for a site where I could shop for a frame somewhere in Western Canada. The dollar is in no condition to be buying american with. I think PinkBike is what I'm after.

I think pink bikes are quite cool......A pink Fat Chance is even cooler! :D

Hey, I wouldn't turn down a team telekom Pinarello Prince LS -- which just happens to be pink [more of a fuscia, actually, but I'm a man and therefore utterly incapable of discerning shades of pink].

One of the hard-core roadies at work rides a custom Roberts with a pink/white colour scheme. Its a muted metallic pink rather than Hot Pink, and the blend to white is really neat. I think its quite a nice colour scheme and complements the smooth lugless brazed frame.

I once had a pink station wagon that I carried my yellow bike in. Does that count?

My wife thinks my Telekom pink cycling jersey, with a big celeste Bianchi logo on it, looks good, and I like it because it is visible to motorists. My other favourite high-visiblity colour for cycling is Pearl Izumi's "screaming yellow."

Roadwarrior has the right idea - let the company know what you think directly, that's the only way they'll know. I doubt if the suits at any of the big bike companies read this forum, so as the saying goes "vote with your wallet".

John, that bike you're building up for your son--paint it pink, kill two birds with one stone! (1) Theft prevention, (2) Penance.

Team Telekom, have Pink Pinarello Prince with black paint and the Jersey is certainly very pink, I won't mind wearing a pink jersey if it is a Team telekom Jersey and a pink Bike if it is a Pink Pinarello Prince:love: :love:

The low end bikes in Australia still have that 'pink is for girls, blue is for boys' thing (including Huffys).

Usually the girls bike is called something like 'Cutie Pie' and has a basket on the front and a streamers wound through the wheels , and the boys bike is blue and black and called 'Brutalizer', or something like that.

I think they should put the basket and streamers on the blue bike and call it the "cutie pie" while still marketing it for boys and they should call the pink one the "brutalizer" and continue to market it for the girls. I wonder what that would do for sales. lol
