Can anyone tell me if bicycles are allowed on Rt 55 in Southern NJ? And if so, has anyone ridden on it and can tell me what the shoulder is like re. bike friendliness?

55 is a limited access highway, on/off ramps, overpasses, etc. While I can't say I've seen signs forbidding bicycles, I'm sure they are not allowed, it would be like riding on the Garden State Parkway.

I posted this link in road cycling:

It is legal, Rte 55 is a freeway, thus not restricted the same way parkways, interstates and expressways are. However, as far as bike friendly? Not so much. The speed limit is 65 mph for its entirety, and the exits come up short and quick. There are many areas with very narrow shoulders.
I would definitely seek alternate other routes, unless you are a gambler.

i have been riding the entire length of rt 55 legally for years.

Art Shalic, past Bicycle Advocate for the South Jersey Wheelmen bicycle club, worked hard on keeping it this way (notice the entrance signs where pedestrians and horses are still not allowed on 55 but the bicycle part of that is taped over). on newer entrances the signs saying "no bicycles" have not been taped, but the rule still stands.

that said, on/off ramps do present some issue w/traffic. the sholders are well wide but the area is not cleaned, truck re-treads (with needles of their "steel belt"), trash and glass have puntured kevlar belted bike tires.

i agree that alternative route choice could make the ride more enjoyable!
