Cyclocross - Fuji Cross Comp

Hi guys. I am new to cycling. I come from a running background. I am thinking about getting a cyclocross bike, instead of a road bike. The reason for this is its flexibility to adapt to various terrain. I also plan on getting into cyclocross. A guy here in Pittsburgh has a 2009 Fuji Cross Comp upgraded to ultegra shifters. He bought it for his daughter, who is a swimmer for cross training purposes. She rode it once. It is in absolutely pristine condition. He is asking $900, but would probably take $800. Is this a good bike? Is this a good deal.

I bought this bike almost 3 months ago and it's a great bike. Also check your local performance store because they might have other sizes in stock.

I checked out performance bike. 56 cm is too large for me. I need somewhere between a 49-51 cm. They did have a 2010 Scattante X-560 Cyclocross Bike for $899. I found a coupon (Ride10) that took 10% off, so that put it a $809 with free shipping. Which do you think is a better bike?

Do you have a local performance store where you live? They might have some Cross Comps left in stock in your size. I know mine has some left in 54cm so they might have some smaller ones in your area.

The Scattante is pretty much a Fuji. They come from the same factory cept that Scattante is Performance house brand. The Fuji does has an Ultegra RD which makes shifting a bit smoother so if you can find the Fuji in your size I would go for that. Also if you show the performance ad to the guy that is selling the used Fuji he might sell it for the same price as the new one and wouldn't be a bad deal either if the bike is in pristine condition and it fits right. Just make sure that if you end up buying the used one that you pay for a good fitting.

Also the saddle on the stock Cross Comp is pretty damn bad so you should think about getting a new one. Try and see if you can get a new saddle before you do your fitting so you can get fitted to the new saddle. I bought a Specialized Avatar Gel and it has been great.

Hi guys, today I bought the 2009 Fuji Cross Comp. Technically it is used, since it was ridden 1 time (on the road). The guy I bought it from owns a BMX store in Pittsburgh. He upgraded to Richey bars and Ultegra shifters. I would like to upgrade the wheels to something a little lighter. Any ideas?

What's your budget for wheels? Are you planning on having two separate wheelsets for road and cross?

These wheels are very light for the price and have gotten very good reviews in these forums and others.

I think that I would be looking for a good all around wheel. I will be riding mainly on the road, but will do some rails to trails. Ultimately, I would like to find ones that someone has taken off their bike to upgrade to top of the line wheels. Mainly I want to find lighter, better wheels cheap.

Look for some used Fulcrum 5's. They come in a ton of different bikes stock but a lot of the time most people will keep the wheels to use as training wheels and then buy more expensive ones for race day.

Also someone posted a pair of Fulcrum 7's on wiggle for less than 2 bills which makes it a pretty good deal for a second set of clinchers. What I have seen about my Cross Comp is that it's so versatile that you are going to want to have a set of wheels with some road slicks and another set for off-road. I am saving right now for a second set of wheels because I am tired of switching out tires all the time. For off-road I would just leave with DC19s with the 30c Kenda's that the bike came with because you really don't need a light wheel for off-road riding and use a pair of Fulcrum 7's or 5's for road.

I've gone touring, commuting, centuries, singletrack trails, and just about every other type of terrain. I've raced with it, taken it over snow, and through heavy rain. Great bike overall. I've also kept the stock tires (30c Kenda Kwicks). In July, I'm taking it to Mammoth Mountain, the ultimate mountain biking destination in California. The looks I'll get at the top of the mountain I'm sure will be priceless (those that don't know about cyclocross bikes). The looks, you know "What is that guy doing here with a road bike?", that one. Picked me up one of those 2009 Fuji Cross Comps in a 56, my size. I pick it up at the shop on Thursday. Could not pass up a semi-105 bike at that price point. I had ordered the Scattante 550 in Feb, but had to return it due to house repair emergency, and am glad I did.

I went for a short ride yesterday on my new bike. I love it so far. It came with shimano road pedals and a buddy gave me a pair of road shoes. Do you think that mountain shoes and pedals make better sense? What do you guys use?

I use spd's. They are much better on the trail. Remember, it is a cyclocross bike, you may be carrying it on occasion.

i have an '07 fuji cross pro. FYI when looking at wheels, try to get something with a similar rim width at the braking surface. Otherwise, you have to adjust the brakes every time you swap wheels. If you're lucky it will only require a tweak of the barrel adjuster for the housing.

I use mountain shoes and walking is never a problem.

I use MTB shoes and pedals on my cross comp because I prefer to have a shoe I can walk around in when I am riding plus if you want to try some cross racing you are going to need some mtb pedals because of the dirt and mud. I have some shimano spd mtb pedals right now but I have been checking out the Time Atac pedals and might get a pair eventually.

I bought some shimano mtb pedals, which have clips on one side and flat pedals on the other. I ordered some MTB shoes off of Jenson today. Now, all I have to get is some wheels and tires (for road usage). I am really enjoying riding. What do you guys think about going to an all carbon fork? Is it worth the money. I guy has an easton 90X cross fork on CL for $175.

Keep the current fork. There is no need to upgrade that on an already exceptional bike. You are better off spending your money on a set of road wheels and tires. Check out Williams System 19 and Continental 4000S for a solid road combination. If you do not have $500 to upgrade then check out Fulcrum 5's for sale at Wiggle.

I've got a 2009 Fuji Cross Comp 52cm also and it's a great bike for commuting as well as trails.

I need some help adjusting my cantilevers after a brake pad change, I don't think the store I bought it from put the link wires on correctly.

Can someone please tell me what size link wire is on the front and rear brakes? You'll find a letter stamped on the end of the retaining plug on the end of the cable.

Mine say "B" on the front and "D" on the rear however the rear link wire looks too long and the last set of rear pads wore unevenly on one side.

Took mine out for the first spin yesterday and discovered that I had overlooked a crushed cable housing during the purchasing process. Took it back and they were going to replace it with standard black housing. My inner curmudgeon came out and made a little bit of a scene over the phone about it - I want the bike like it is supposed to be. They recommended everything except actually calling Fuji to see if they could get a replacement. All other bikes in that model/size were sold out, and amazingly, the 52cm bike that they had left has a '2 inch shorter housing'. That's not good for turning at slower speeds, and frankly, a 4cm difference in frame doesn't seem like it would warrant a housing THAT much shorter. They finally found a housing that was only about an inch shorter, and are cutting the other housing to match. Honestly, how freaking hard is it to get in touch with of one of your major manufacturers and see what they can do? Am I naive to think that once they make a 2009 model that they cease making this particular type of housing?

I have a 2003 Fuji Cross Comp and it has been the best purchase I've made in a long time. It is my everything bike and handles all of it fairly well. I've gone commuting, centuries, singletrack trails, and just about every other type of terrain. I've taken it over snow, and through heavy rain. Great bike overall. I've also kept the stock tires (32c Ritchey Cross Max) but have also run 700x23 Contis and 700x35 slicks. The looks I get in the woods sometimes are priceless (those that don't know about cyclocross bikes). The looks, you know "What is that guy doing here with a road bike?", that one. It will be fun.
