Greetings,

I have a steel frame that has some rust and needs a paint job. Does anyone have any recomendations on paint shops (and the cost for basic repainting) in the SF Bay area?

Does anyone have any practical tips for using the various rust converter products (Naval Jelly, Extend, Gemplers Rust Converter)?

Depending on the cost of having the rust removed professionally and having the frame repainted I may have to do it myself.

Hey Marc,

I actually thought about this myself for one of my bikes and was looking around. Found this guy in Santa Cruz who does all painting for Kestrel and Calfee - higher end stuff. I live in San jose and was thinking about going over and checking his shop out, but have not done as of yet. Here's the link - there are a few others (locally), but none with the kind of online information and "apparent" credibility of this one (I don't actually know anyone who has used this shop...). If you're willing to go outside local, I have found some outstanding service providers - whose prices also reflect it - but this shop's services seem to be reasonably priced for what is indicated.

It's pretty hard to beat Spectrum Power Works in Colorado Springs, CO. Yeah, I know they're not in the bay area, but their work is great, and if you're in the habit of bashing your bikes around a bit and want something a bit tougher than wet paint, powder is worth considering.
