This sport looks like a blast. I have been a long time Mtn biker and recently bought a road bike Caad9. Can I use my road frame for this ir are the Cannondale CAAD9's cyclocross frames beefier?
I would love to buy a set of wheels for my bike and try it out. I understand the brake issue but to be honest I rode mtn bikes back in the day that were old school caliper type.

you won't have room for wider tires. If you willing to dish money out, go get a CAAD9 and knock yourself out.

No, carbon frames and road bikes are not what you want for a multi surface bike.

Cyclocross bikes usually have slightly shorter top tubes, higher bars and more relaxed steering geometry, to make it easier to keep control with difficult surface conditions. You dont want road shoes with exposed cleats as this would be hell on running sections
