Guys - just a follow up to my question a few weeks back "Can I be ready for a Century in 26 days?". Well, after much advice I adjusted my goals to 50 miles and the race was yesterday. I went with 5 guys in my neighborhood (one planning to do 100, the rest of us doing 50). We had a blast. The race is the "Hotter 'n' Hell 100" in Mineral Wells TX (about 2 hours from DFW) and there are 8000-10000 riders. We started at 7:30 or so and finished at 10:30. Our friend who was planning to do the 100 fell and broke his collar bone and shattered his helmet (his head is fine). The temperature was very cool (75 or so) due to a huge storm that blew in and passed just as the race was starting. The winner of the 100 miler did it in 4 hours 4 mins.

Overall we had a great time and though I could have did 100 it would have turned a great, fun day into a very painful day that I would have regretted. Much thanks!

Adam

Thanks for the update. So often people ask questions, and never write back to tell how the event worked out for them. Glad you had a great time.

Sounds like you did great, and you've got a great attitude too! Myself, I am like you- ride in confort vs. riding in pain? No contest. I'll ride in comfort anyday if I'm not ready for the type of ride that is planned.

Now that you've done this one, you can start to train for the century- definitely, about Jan or February, you want to start building on mileage and speed, and by summer, you'll be doing dry runs! :D

Congrats on a job well done! I hope your friend heals soon.

Congrats, acrafton. Next year you'll be doing the full century. It was surprisingly nice weather for HHH.

Where did your friend fall? I saw a rider down just outside of Electra being attended to and an ambulance about 1/4 mile up the road just leaving. Fortunately, it didn't look like there were any cars involved at either spot.

yes - that was him. He remembers nothing about the accident other than "the person in front of me was cut off and locked them up. Then, I woke up in the ambulance."

Congratulations!
I'm still getting ready to ride (not race) 35 miles and I thought *that* was an accomplishment to do in 30 days...

You are some sort of stud rider! The ride is in Wichita Falls, not Mineral Wells, so you must have gotten in about 80 miles of riding before the rest of the people started!

I hope he recovers quickly. It's scary to see another rider on the ground like that. About the only thing I don't like about the HHH is there are so many riders that the first 20-30 miles can be pretty dangerous. You really have to watch out.

Yes indeed...Wichita Falls, and there were 8,300 riders to be precise. I was there too...did the full 100, although it was 104 miles. My first century...keep training buddy, you'll be up to the century mark in no time!!
