Tandem Cycling - Tandem work stand reviews?

I'm looking for a work stand that will support a tandem and stay balanced even if a wheel is removed. Any thoughts out there? Pro and cons of different stands? Anyone use an Ultimate for their tandem - I'm leaning that way.

I use an Ultimate with my tandem - never a problem. I just clamp it to the stoker seat post. I simply lower the front of the bike so the forks rest on the ground when I take off the front wheel.

Was about to post a similar query, but more specifically, has anyone had success with the Minoura RS 5000 (http://www.minourausa.com/english/tool-e/rs5000-e.html)?

Not the most heavy duty, but one of the few available here.

It sounds like you are trying to find a stand that will hold a complete tandem in the air and be stable. That is going to be very difficult. I have a simple Park Tools home repair stand that I use to clamp the stoker's seat tube, and the front wheel either rests on the floor, or I put a random box underneath it if I need to work on something at the front of the bike. Taking the rear wheel off is then no problem, if the front wheel needs to come off then the fork can rest on the box.

+2 on the Ultimate stand. I think it is actually called "Feedback Sports" now. I believe they bought the Ultimate product line a year or two ago. It's an awesome stand!!

I don't see the sense in trying to balance the tandem off the ground. IF you had enough Captain seatpost showing you may be able to clam pn the captain seatpost and then balance the bike off the ground. Not the case for me...

I clamp on the stoker seatpost and leave the front tire on the ground unless removing the front tire and then I rest the front fork on an upside down 5 gal bucket.

I use an Ultimate on a Rans Screamer recumbent tandem. I would not try to balance the whole bike on it but I lightly clamp near the stoker seat and rest the front wheel on an overturned 5 gallon pail. If I needed the front elevated I could clamp farther forward.

I use an old Park PRS-6 stand. It has a clamp sort of like this:

I clamp the top tube of my CoMo Speedster just behind the captain's saddle. Works fine for anything I want to do except heavy work. I put the bike on the ground for pedal changes and stuff like that.

Thanks everyone. Our 50# Burley Duet is easily hanging from an Ultimate Pro Elite stand. The stand is a work of art! I was kinda shocked how beefy it was when I opened the box. Not too sound like a sales rep or anything, but it's too easy to use! And putting it away is even easier - glad it comes with a heavy duty carrying case because it will have to live in the closet when not in use.
