I had a Long discussion today with my Wife of all people about eating foods that give you energy. Clif bars, bannanas, potatoes, fig newtons, bread, etc. are all used for fuel.
She thinks that carbs takes energy away from you.
What the heck?
I say shes wrong, if she was right, everyone wouldnt eat all the high carb stuff befor a ride right?
Someone please help, I dont want to be doing the wrong thing.
before I workout, Ill do toast, maybe a bananna, and stock up the bottles with gatorade and water
thanks

if you have to race against me, then your wife is spot on correct!
Seriously, carbs are essential to performance.

Your wife might be right if all you're doing is sitting around. The carbs can cause an insulin spike, causing your blood sugar to drop and make you feel pooped. During exercise the insulin response is suppressed because your body is using, rather than storing, the blood sugar.
Yeah, you'll feel pooped if you just sit around after you eat a pasta dinner [just to use the word "pooped" once more in this thread]. You need to get out and start burning that stuff or else it'll store.
If you burn it right away, you'll feel the opposite of pooped.

the idea is to store your pasta - it's stored as muscle and liver glycogen and is extremely important

today is thursday. i will switch to all carb meals for 2 full days in prep for the sat & sun 70+ miles high speed efforts in the bike clubs. nutrition for an athlete and nutrition for a sedentary person is not a fair comparison.
energy begets energy. bodies in motion stay in motion...bodies at rest tend to stay at rest.
