Bicycle Mechanics - Kona Ku chain suck problem

I have a 8sp. Kona with a chainsuck problem. It has RaceFace cranks and a XT front DR. The problem is when shifting up or down between the granny cog and mid-range the chain often get wedged between the cranks and the frame. Any suggestion. New chain shimano HG and new cogs have been put on bike.

I would suspect your chain is too long, or the spring in your RD isn't strong enough to keep tension on it.

When you replaced the chain, did you use it just as it came in the package? If so, that is probably the cause. You'll need to remove a couple links. If not, then it's probably the RD.

this is probably not the problem but hey who knows ;)

does it happen every time you shift? or only under certain conditions. When you shift gears, the chain has a hard time changing under a lot of stress (i.e. out of the saddle pedaling) sometimes it might help to break your cadience for a second to get in a slower easier pedal to change gears, and then pick it back up again.

of couse if you have a part problem this is kinda irrelevant :D

The other posters may be correct. Put the bike on a workstand and watch the bottom of the chain carefully as you turn the cranks and shift the front derailleur. See if you can detect the conditions under which the chain fails to fall off the bottom of the chainring and starts to "suck" upward.

I guess my much-maligned under-chainstay U-brake has some use, after all. ;)

I have a 2001 Kona stuff and I get chain suck all the time when I take drops...My chain is crazy tight so it should be fine ...it seems to be a problem with the design and geometry kona uses on the rear chainstays.
