Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The family and I are camping this weekend in the Cagle Recreation Area of SHNF. I can only find info online about off-road trails, so I was wondering if there were in good roads in/around the park for some riding. Or, are there any good group rides in the area?

"Best Bike Rides- Texas" by Andy White, 2nd Edition, has two "Cold Spring Rambles", ride #37.
Start at Coldspring, circle up north on 156, then up FM 224 by the lake, back south on 156 farther west, one loop.
Start at Coldspring, southwest on 150, then south on 2025, east on FM 2666, to 150, then either north on 150 (short loop) or north via FM 222 and FM 3128 and FM 1514.

See the book for more details. It notes that some of these roads don't have shoulders, some have heavy traffic, etc. I haven't ridden there myself.

Also, see this site, note the route map links in particular. It looks like the routes are similar to the above.

Hope this helps.

Also Do not take Shell Oil Road it is dirt and soft sand. Mountain bike ok but you should lock your shock.

No berm on 150 west of 2025. Speed limit is 70 mph

Road construction on 59. It was difficult to navigate 3 weeks ago 59 south from Cleveland to FM 2090 I had to walk a mile and i had 38c tyres. I would need to drive that stretch before i would ride it again
The only good road to coldspring is 2025

This is my route to Coldspring from Porter http://ridewithgps.com/routes/59509

Some of the roads, even though they look like roads on google (Shell Oil Road is one), are nothing more than fire roads so they are rock or sand, even some of the ones that i take, but I ride 700x30 and 700x32 tires so I am not bothered by them. I rarely get on 59. I haven't done the around the lake routes yet. That is on my list for an upcoming 3 day weekend trip. FM 1725 is nice as is 945, most of the FM around there are nice but some might have small shoulders (6" to 12") Some of them have very big shoulders (FM2025) but most are 18" shoulders.

Cars on the smaller FM's are rare so it isn't bad at all. I love the area.
