General Cycling Discussion - Downloading routes from pc to gps?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

How do you download a route plotted with google maps to any gps? In other words, just how do "you" do it and with what gps device? I will be purchasing a new gps for my car but really just trying to learn at this point. I have an old generic brand gps and need a backup for it. Is there a way to download a bike route to it from google or anyother site?
Anyone doing it with their gps?
Thanks,

I have a Garmin Edge 605.
Depending on the site/source of the map:
* If I have a KMZ File (Google Maps) -- I use http://www.gpsies.com/ and use it to convert it to a Garmin CRS file,
* If I'm using Map My Ride -- "Tools" - Save To Garmin CRS,
Once I have the CRS File, I'll load it into the Garmin Training Center Software and then send it to my device.
I haven't figured out how to load a turn-by-turn onto it though which would be handy. Some times looking at the map, I'm not 100% clear if I should be going straight/veer right/etc, and having that kind of prompt would be handy.
