Mountain Biking - HARO Extreme X1....good for aggresive trail riding?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I go riding quite a bit in thetford forest (good singletrack +bombholes, largely on a level but with loads of undulating twisty trails) and am a mere 14 years old so dont have a huge budget. I had been looking into value hardtails until I saw the Extreme X1. My budget is about £500 or maybe a bit more so getting a reduced last year (2004 now lots of 2005 bikes are out or coming out soon) seems a good idea, and the haro looks to be a good bike. The obvious problems are the weight (35lbs) and the quite dodgy shock, but assuming it can stand up to fairly small jumps and drops, then it seems enough.
Any comments/opinions etc. would be much aprecciated.

The part spec on the X1 leaves a lot to be desired. I'd stick with a hardtail or wait until you can afford a better full suspension. I do like the Haro Extreme frames, but I wouldn't even consider anything less than the X2.

I like Haro's. I have an x3 and its great. But like a2 said. Unless you get the x2. It's not worth it. Look at some Hardtail. You can get much better bikes for less if you go hardtail.

so you think that the x2 is a good bike, if i could find it?
I do agree with you on the hardtail side, they are all I have looked at until now, but the x1 seemed to be very high value.

The rear shock and the forks are suspect on the X1.
The X2 has some decent components and what I would consider "worthy".

Well the x2 has the same frame design and rear shock as the x3. It has some lower priced components. Hayes mx-1 discs (heard they weren't the best but still better the cantilevers) Marz. EXR pro 120mm looks to be a decent fork. Never riden it though. The BB is a little different. Probably just not as beefy as the ISIS that sports "DH" in the name. Dif rims, the sun hill rods and Kenda blue groove tires.
Thats looking like a light freeride/trail bike. Just to keep it on the safe side I wouldn't go bigger then 3-4ft to flat (drops to flats are tough on bikes) and nothing bigger then 7-8 to tranny.
Also, it would make a decent dirt jumping bike. When the rear shocks rebound is tuned right you can rip up the jumps amazingly well. All in all a good bike at the price. You get what you pay for.

cool, thanks for that, it sounds good with a good spec. Although I reckon ht is the way to go, I have also seen an Orbea 'Wild Feelin' (shame about the name...) which actually has better gears (deore throughout) better fork + longer travel (marzocchi EXR supra 120mm)...cool. Unfortunately, it is not on the orbea website, and i cannot find it through google, unusual, so any links would be great. thanks for the help so far
