General Cycling Discussion - Car gps for biking?

Does anyone here use a car gps for navigation on their bicycle? Which one?

I've used a TomTom preloaded with coordinates I got from the Historic Aerials website to find the locations
of old farmhouses and barns while riding my mountain bike out in the woods.

my garmin nuvi 205 has about 5 hours of battery life (give or take), and a bike mount... the 305 is water resistant i believe. doesn't do much more for me than tell me exact speeds when i am around town though... i havn't gone too far where i didn't know where i was going (have lived in my town for 25 years) so i know where i am going in 50 miles any way pretty much

Have used a Garmin Etrex Vista CX -- a hiking gps with an altimeter -- with a bike mount. It works well.

I've used my tom tom but it is annoying to keep stopping to look at it. it is useful in conjunction with a map o go exploring and get you home. I wouldn't just ride with it on mounted on my bars or something. 1st of all the battery doesn't last as long as I might ride.

Thanks for replying. I want voice prompts. My baby boomer eyes find it hard to see the odometer and cue sheet/map so would love to have voice prompts and imo that will be the next thing for the Gamin 705. But at a price I cannot afford. So I read on here somewhere that some use a car TomTom or Garmin for navigation and add a battery booster for cell phone use as a battery. I would still have paper maps and cue sheets for backup but would not have to stop to read odometer or cue sheet. Both Nuvi and TT have car gps that has "Bicycling" as alternative routing on one of their units.

I use stick-on bifocal patches on my sunglasses, so i can read the display on my Garmin Edge 705 unit. Without them, it would just be a blur.

I also have a handlebar mount, but looking at it in traffic or when moving seems a quick way to an early grave.

That's what I'm talking about. Thanks. I figured on handlebar mounting for sat. sighting and hearing voice prompts. Also plan on adding battery booster similar to cellphones to extend battery life. How long you had it and would you purchae it again? Thanks again.
