Road Cycling - Speedplay Pedals, advice on switching...

Hi, I am sure this post has been posted many times before but this is not about advice on new pedals.

Currently I have three bikes, you can read about them on my profile
Specialized Sirrus has Shimano SPD M525 cleat
KHS CX100 has Speedplay X2 with Nike crappy shoes
Recently fixed Trek pseudo triathlon bike with worn M525 cleat.

I am trying to figure out if the speedplay are worth switching to the Trek and whether or not they are good for long distance with race bike set up. I have to get new shoes anyway as the Nike shoes are actually off sizes...(8 left AND 9 right)

Any advice and opinion welcomed

Speedplay pedals are fine for long distance. They are currently the only pedal I use for road, and have for many years. If you like them on the KHS, why not put them on the Trek as well.

I second that. People always say that the platfrom on the speedplay is small and all this junk but if you have good shoes, you dont get any hot spots. i highly recommend them for your trek.

That whole platform thing is bunk when talking about speedplays. Sure, the pedal is small, but look at the size of the cleat. Having such a large cleat spreads the pressure over a large area of your foot. That's why you won't really get hotspots with speedplays. I just happen to not like them because it's too easy to get crap stuck in the cleats so you can't clip in.

I guess you should also recommend "good" shoes too. What's a good shoe to go with the speedplay's?

With the correct adapter, any shoe should work with speedplays, and it is generally considered the stiffer the shoe the better which holds true for any pedal system.

With that said, I recommend Time shoes since the speedplay cleat was designed for a flat surface (like time cleats), which the older time shoes used to have. Time has since switched to a more generic sole requiring an adapter for any pedal system. The new Time shoes still work well with speedplay since the adapter sits almost flush with the sole of the shoe. Shoes with curved soles are more of a pain since the adapter sits on the curved surface and extends the cleat from the shoe further.

i have a pair of nike's that i swear by... i wish i could remember the name (they're blue and black with a carbon bottom). i've logged quite a few miles with them and my speedplays and love 'em both.

i'd suggest getting a pair of cafe covers, though. i've found that the cleats get beaten up pretty badly if you walk in 'em for too long.

I use Speedplay Zero pedals, and have 04 Specialized Pro Road shoes...not the carbon sole, but one down. The speedplay cleat fits it perfect...never a hot spot at all.

I concur on Sidi Genius 4 shoes and Speedplay x-2s. Covers work great and fit in rear jersey pocket so they are always available. Hop of the bike, slip on the covers and a way I go.

Speedplay Zeros with Sidi Energy (pretty much same as Genius 4 but with more gadgety buckles) and they work great. I've got about 12,000 miles on this combo.

Thanks for the advice....I always saw those Shimano "cutting board" or Look "power boat", you would have to use a little imagination, but I have been very happy with Speedplay up to now, no moving parts really...
