I was successfully converted by a co-worker and riding buddy who sent me this link. Dunno if its already been posted here, if so, the mods can feel free to delete.

The force with which he got hit to sustain such injuries while wearing a helmet must have been insane.

If that doesn't convince people to wear a helmet nothing will. They should make a video of that mandatory prior to buying a bike.

No doubt the helmet naysayers will say this is not proof that helmets are better.

I don't wear a helmet, but will get one after a few near misses with cars.

Wer/don't wear a helmet, I don't care - but people who claim that there is no evidence that helmets make cycling safer get my goat.

Do we really need a peer-reviewed double blind study for common sense things too?

Either that, or each LBS and department store bike shop should buy back a severely damaged helmet or two as a display.

If you can come up with a proposal it is easy to get government funding for one.

Wear a helmet. Ride as if it doesn't make any difference.

If you don't want to wear a helmet, that's your choice.
If you get killed or are in a coma from a head injury, that's also your choice.
Everyone here, I'm assuming, is old enough to take care of themselves.

not postive on your logic here, and i'm certain that no matter the age, there are people here who can't take care of themselves. Myself included.

Of course everything has its exceptions. But I, for one, am not going out to lecture everyone if they don't have a helmet. I make my recommendation, let them know the consequences and their options and let them make the decision.

You are right, cyclists have the legal right to be stupid. But other cyclists have the right to call stupidity "stupid."

Whoa...theres a link you shouldn't click on after lunch. That said I've been riding sans helmet since I started biking again. Never that mank miles and I figured ...yeah...I'll get one one day. Then yesterday I rode past a roadside memorial of a kid that got clipped last year by a hit & run driver. Between that and and this link was all the "gentle" reminders I needed to get a helmet. Picked one up on the way home.

It's not enough to just have a helmet, but you have to maintain it, if you get it an accident toss it out and go buy a new one. Your really an idiot if you don't were a hemet.

After an accident, it's possible that you may not be able to take care of yourself anymore. In fact, you might not be able to work anymore.

Yes and before the accident, most adults are able to make decisions for themselves. If, after presenting them with the facts and consequences, they choose to not wear a helmet, smoke, gamble their money away, cheat on their wives, etc, lecturing them only goes so far before you have to let them live their lives.

Does "take care of themselves" mean that they will pick up their own $250,000 - $1,000,000 medical bills after a near-fatal brain injury, and pay for their own long-term care in the nursing home for the rest of their lives?

Whee! When is someone going to write me a tax rebate check?

I really believe that I wouldn't have survived my over the handlebars crash (http://denise2004crash.crazyguyonabike.com) back on May 20th if I hadn't been wearing a helmet. I'm back on my bike, and have been since 4th of July weekend, but my energy levels and the distances I can ride are still low as compared to my normal at this time of year. But I am on my bike and I am recovering - and yes, I am wearing a brand new replacement helmet!

I saw 5 cyclists yesterday all with no helmet - one had a £800 bike and propper gear on too (the others seemed a bit recreational but this guy looked experianced) - it really sets a bad example for people like me who have just started out - my helmet looks stupid but I suppose road rash on the face and a hole in the head looks pretty silly too. Thankfully I have a healthy fear of death and incapacity so the helmet stays.
I honestly don't understand the logic of not wearing a helmet - the only time its going to occur to you is when it goes wrong.

Denise, hey! I haven't been hanging out on crazyguyonabike.com lately, great to hear your rehab is working out!

I can see why wearing a helmet is considered a good thing. I can see that people think that everyone should do that. But do you walk around saying things like "I think that people who drink alcohol are stupid," or wonder out loud why they do things that are so harmful to themselves?

To each their own. Let everyone make their own decision.

(I wear mine, for the record.)
