Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This is very troubling. I never leave my bike unguarded, but to be shot over it. Sheesh.:notamused: Seems like the thieves are following the carjackers' playbook.
Be careful out there and lock your bike to make it unappealing to thieves.

Can't blame the rides for just setting their bikes down to buy some food not 10 feet away

Oh, I'm not blaming them. Just reminding people that this is LA, so lock your bike or don't leave it unguarded. I blame the thieves.
wow... not even the buddy system works anymore... how messed up is this...

Yeah, messed up BUT first of all it was 3AM and second they were in Koreatown. You wouldnt find me hanging out with or without a bike in that neighborhood at 3AM. The shooting could have been over any kind of theft, so dont get too alarmed.

The LA Times has been running a series of articles about bike thefts in LA. They are trying to show that there has been a pattern including a 29% increase of reported bike thefts. Now it appears that thieves will become violent. As a female, I probably wouldn't be in K-town at 3 am either. But if I was coming from a group ride with another cyclist, I may. Sometimes it's safer to ride early am than in the day.

it could happen anywhere... what if the thieves live in a small quiet town and decide to steal a bike nearby...?

this...
i do feel safer actually on my bike riding than on my bike stopped somewhere... like i have ridden my bike near some gangsters and bums... but as long as i'm on my bike doesn't feel that scary... but it still is... there is no way to tell what the other person is on, or thinking about doing... it could even happen on the trails...
we shouldn't be alarmed, but aware...

Would people steal a dirty pink Trek?
That's soooo mean.:notamused: Don't you know every bike thief wants a dirty pink Trek,:) like a car thief wanting a BMW.
Anyway it's cleaned with new brake pads, gray striped tires and a new ultegra chain.:thumb:

"The video shows a man wearing a blue or black baseball cap, a blue sweater with long white sleeves and the letters "LA" on the chest, and blue jeans. He is described as Latino, about 5 feet 5, and weighing 150 pounds."
Well, looks like they are REALLY close to finding them.
"He said while cyclists may be tempted to resist, they should "steer clear and let it go."'
And don't bother calling the cops because they'll just add it to the list of "things we don't bother with".

Wow. Typical Dodger's fan :) Let's go Red Sox!
Let the bike go folks. If anything, he gets to ride your "problem" into oncoming hopefully and you can build/buy/borrow the bike of your dreams.

:innocent:
I finally have a legitimate reason to apply for that concealed carry permit. Jokes aside, this sucks. Let it go. A stolen bike hurts less than hot lead.
