Granted, you can go through every nook and cranny of town and have a monstrous commute...How long is your commute on the main route you take?

Mine is about 8 miles to work, and 10 miles (i take a more scenic route) on the way home...so 18 miles roundtrip.

shortest route: 1.5miles one way
longer route: 5 miles one way.

I usually take short route in, and for lunch, then the longer route home. So about 9.5 miles/day. It's nice to have such a short option, for when I'm late or something.

10.5 miles one-way, mostly flat, but the streets cause me to do intervals between the lights, to avoid issues with cagers.

There are longer routes I can take home, but so far, I've not gone that route.

18 miles each way by bike, 20 miles each way by car. The bike path is more direct than the roads, now if I could just get my bike to go as fast as the car :)

14 mile round trip. I do a bike/train/bike commute, so my 14 miles of riding saves me a 70-mile round trip drive every day! :)

19.6km each way. Not too short, so I get some exercise, and not so far that it takes too long to ride it.

My new commute (to college) is about 7-7.5 miles each way with a lot of pretty moderate hills. My old commute (to my internship) was about 12.5 miles each way, and more hilly.

Until recently My journey was about 10 miles each way (different routes), but I've taken to adding extra distance on the way to work. The result is about 14 miles into work and about 10 to get home.

About 50 km round trip through rolling hills and some flats...takes me about an hour each way. Taking me a little bit longer now because of the autumn winds.

Mine's 22 miles each way. Fairly flat since I roughly follow the path of the river Thames, but it is in to central London

Mine takes between 40 minutes and an hour, the total distance is 25 miles.

When gas started to get really stupid in price this past Spring, I decided to bite the bullet, sell one of our cars, and buy a road bike for commuting.

The route is hilly and mostly quiet, so I can work on my sprints and interval training- and there's about a half dozen other folks who commute in at the same time as me so there's a regular posse to help with drafting.

I haven't ridden a bike regularly in 20 years, and the first six weeks were brutal- I could barely walk for the first week, and my aerobic capacity was pretty pitiful. But now, I have lost 15 pounds, can bound up stairs three at a time, and my wife says I look pretty good in tights....

My commute is 30 miles each way. I'll be riding it tomorrow for the first time in a couple months - and I just converted my bike to single speed. There are a couple of long climbs that I'm not looking forward to mashing a 42x16 up. So far I have only needed to get off and walk where I predicted I would. Tomorrow I'll have to get off and push a bit. What the hey, walking is exercise too! I used to leave at 7:00 in order to get there, cleaned up and changed by 9:00. Tomorrow I'll be leaving a little early.

In Winter I ride to work and get a lift home. In Summer I get a lift to work and ride home. The distance is 40km one way with 480 metres of hills heading to work or 840 metres heading home. Some days a flat ride sounds tempting.

CHEERS.

40 mi round trip

How long do you people who ride long distances take?

Personally, I don't find spending that much time riding appeals to me.

My girlfriend keeps calling me insane because I used to ride 25mi/2hours round trip, but that took me just minutes more than a train commute and anybody would have agreed with me that paying for parking and a car would have been unwise in my situation. But if it came to 3-4 hours a day on the bike, I'd be inclined to try to come up with an alternative.

Not long enough. :(
My last job was 14.3 miles one way. Great workout.
My current temporary p/t job is only 8.4 miles from home. Not much of a workout. Guess I'll have to find a longer route to work.

My ride to work is only 1.2 (one way) miles in a hot sun. No showers at work but at 1 mile I'm not sweating all that much. I ride up in the day and come back at night.

20 miles round trip… It could be 17.5 one way.
Is everyone riding a road bike? I just put some slicks on an old MTB and I think the full 17.5 would kill me. The 7.5 part that I am not riding is very hilly.

At present it is about 3.5 miles into work (with a train journey in the middle) and about 4.5 miles home (again with a break for the train). I am, gradually, going to increase the distance by going to the next station along the line.
