I just bought a 1990 Bianchi Volpe, with Suntour bar-end shifters, Suntour XCE front/rear derailleurs, and a Suntour 7-speed freewheel cluster. Everything works fine, but I am most comfortable riding on the hoods, and do.not.like either the position or feel of bar-end shifters. Besides, when the weather gets chilly up here, brifters allow me to cover the units and keep my hands warm!

So, I bought a pair of NOS Shimano Sora 7-speed STI brifters. Bianchigirll was careful to mention the need to match drive-train components, and (in any case) I wanted a freewheel cluster with a larger low-end sprocket, so I found a Sunrace clone of the old Shimano 11-34 "Mega 7" cluster.

So now, my question is this: Is the Shimano Sora 7-speed STI with Shimano Deore M772-SGS rear derailleur combo kosher? I know that the RD has a 45T capacity, and can handle the 34T sprocket; but will the brifters operate the RD properly?

Finally, for the small change that it'll cost, should I also swap the FD for a Shimano unit?

TIA!

Sounds like the parts for the rear will work together just fine.
For the front, If you're shifting a double, you probably can get it to shift OK. If it's a triple, I'd give the Suntour FD a try, replace if you can't get satisfactory shifting.

Rear should shift fine.

Front, I'm not so sure. If it was my bike I'd try it with whatever front derailleur I had. If that doesn't work satisfactorily (my guess) I'd install a Sora front derailleur. When I already own parts, even mis-matching parts, I try to make them work. If I'm going to have to buy parts, I hold out for stuff that matches.
