Hi all! I'm Robert and I live in Poplar Bluff, MO; a small town in Southeast Missouri. I am new to the site (NEWBIE) and I suppose new to riding (for fitness). I have riden on the trails mostly and always loved it, although I've never gotten serious about it, it's always been a form of recreation and enjoyment for me. Now I find myself getting more serious about my fitness (getting older) and have increased my running and starting riding on the road. I eventually want to do triathlons (sprint size), a half marathon and full marathon. My goal is to do them this year and then maintain...indefinitely. Right now I ride an inexpensive Schwinn moutain bike, because that's all I have but I just ordered me an entry level road bike (also Schwinn). I want to start riding much more both for fitness, cross-training and to compete; if only with myself! I have a couple friends in town that are doing Tri's and ride more than I, so I'm playing catch-up with them when we ride!
I'm also a soldier, full-time in the MO National Guard; so it's important for me to stay fit! I've only learned to love running for myself in the last few years, before it was just a daunting task that I HAD to do for the Army! Now that I'm incorporating riding into my training, I hope to have improvements in my run performances as well. I know it will help me with my over-use running issues that I occasionally get (shin splints). I look forward to what this year holds for me and always look for new ways to improve myself, my life, and my fitness!

Not at this time, I'm just starting on road riding and training. I just ordered and entry level roadie from Schwinn. It's more a matter of $$ vs. commitment at this point. I want to be certain that I'm in for the long haul before I invest in a bike that cost in excess of $1000. I've read on some benefits of a tri-bike but I'm not at that level...AND before I start participating in any triathlons, I have to start swimming! Honestly, I can't remember the last time I went swimming and I have never trained in the water...kind of a prerequesite if I plan on doing a tri!
