Bicycle Mechanics - Stem, headset, frame, and fork question

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have been mountain biking for a long time, but when I have had a problem or needed something replaced on my bike I have always gone to my local shop. In the past couple years I have been trying to do more of that kind of stuff myself. One thing that I am confused about are what I need to know about my headset, fork, stem, and frame in order to find a replacment for one of these parts. I've heard and read about terms like threaded, threadless, and steerer tube width but I am still a little bit confused. If someone could give me guidence on this matter it would help me out a alot. Thanks!

Your answer is in your post. Whats there to be confused about? You either have threaded or threadless. Its either 1", 1-1/8", or 1-1/4". Measure everything center to center.

Measure...with a tape measure.
OK..option 2....bring it into your LBS and ask them what you have.
